I need help getting my tractor started. I would start sometime and run great then just shut of like you turned the key off. It would not start again for days, then you would try it again and it would start right up and maybe run for 5 minutes then turn off. It has a 6 volt positive ground system. I bought a electronic ignition and hot shot coil. Still won"t start. I replaced ignition switch and all the wires. I soldered all conectors to make sure of contact. still will not start. I check the voltage coming out of the ignition switch and it is 6.2 volts going to the electronic ignition. My question is could I have a bad generator and that is my problem. I can pull the coil wire going into the distributor cap and I am not getting any spark there. I also took out a plug and held it to the frame and I am not getting any spark their either. I just don"t know if a bad generator or voltage regulator could be my problem. Please help me if you can I am running out of things to try.

as long as you have a minimally hot battery, the generator and voltage regulator won't affect whether the tractor will run or not. we have a few that haven't charged in years but run fine. We just charge up the batteries when they start spinning the starter slow. I'd start with the electronic ignition in the distributor.

The generator and voltage regulator have nothing to do with the fact that your tractor will not run. They ONLY charge the battery and do not effect the ignition part.

You say that you have 6.2 volts coming out of the key switch to the coil. But have you checked the voltage inside the distribtor at the ignition module. These old Fords have a bad problem of the wire shorting out right where it crosses threw the distribtor case.

If you do have voltage all the way to the module try cranking the motor over with the distribtor cap off to make sure the rotor is turning. Your pin may have sheared off that holds the gear on the distribtor shaft.

Post back once you have more info.

I just got the electronic ignition from Yesterday's Tractor Friday. Do you think their could be something wrong with it? I have it hooked up just like the instruction say.

How do you check the voltage at the module? Their is a rubber grommet where the wires go into the distributor. Do I hold my meter on the module between the magnetic pick Up?

Your mistake was to swap out the ignition without first confirming that you had an ignition problem. Now you don't know if you're dealing with your original problem, a new problem introduced by the electronic ignition, or both. First rule of troubleshooting is to always simplify and never add new unknowns to the problem if you can avoid it.

Based on your description, it sounds like you introduced a new problem. I'm not familiar with your electronic ignition, but with the breaker point ignition you need minus six volts to the negative coil terminal (referenced to ground), and the spark is generated by interrupting the connection from the positive coil terminal to ground. If this still holds true for your electronic ignition, you should be able to take the distributor completely out of the system by disconnecting it from the coil. Then take a jumper from the coil's positive terminal and touch it to ground, then remove it. If that doesn't give you a spark from the coil, then you have a very fundamental problem. Otherwise, go forward from there.

mark is right, were it my tracor id put the original point system back in the tractor then find and fix the real problem, its obviously not the points or condensor its probably either the ignition switch or a wire somewhere is rubbing and shorting to ground
