IH 720 or White 588 on land hitch plow?

Leaning towards an on land hitch plow, either a IH 720 or White 588 6x18. I heard that the White pulls harder, anybody got any info they could share about either of these plows? Thanks for sharing.

The White 6 X 18 plow was one of the best heavy duty plows built. It was designed for some serious plowing. If you don't have at least 150 horsepower in front of it, forget it.

I have a 720 plow and like it well. However, I think the White is heavier constructed and more durable.

I haven"t pulled a 720 ih plow but can tell you a White 6-18 is an awsome plow. I pulled a 3pt hitch one behind a White 4-150 over a lot of acres. I"ve always been told an Oliver/White plow pulls easier than most. The White plow is coupled up short, the first coulter on a 3pt hitch model is mounted on the drawbar between the lift arms. Have you ever notice other steerable plows how they are streched out and long? Especially a John Deere. As a youngster my Dad always said that a short hitch pulls easier than a long one.

We run an IH 720 4-20's and an Oliver 548 4-18's and I really couldn't pick which on I like better. Both tough to beat and pull easy.

Go for the White. I've never heard it said before that the White/Oliver plows pull hard. Most of our neighbors who plow anymore still use Oliver & White plows. No JD plows around and few IH's.

The White plows do a better job of covering the trash as well.

I"ve had a 720 6-18 since 1980, a White 588 5-18 for about a dozen. White definitely turns a better furrow. Seen it many times side by side.If it "pulls harder" (which is very subjective without drawbar pull evidence- ie BS) it is because it is doing a better job of turning soil evenly. 720 likes to ride up over stalks on the first bottom. Their trip system is different. I also don"t care for the cast standard on the 720, vs easily straightened/repaired steel on the 588.

Both great plows, but I would guess that the 588 pulls a little easier, and the 720 has more trash clearance. The IH will probably cost a little more.

Thanks guys for the info. In the past I used a White 598 5 bottom but it didn't pull right ever since I bought it used. One fellow said it was due to the fact that on any hyd. adjustable plow you can get wear at the pivot points and that will cause problems with line of draft. So I sold it and picked up a IH 720 4x18 and that pulled fine behind my White 2-135 for many years, but always thought it could cover a little better than it did. I recently bought a Ford TW35 with 170 hp with fwd and duals and would like to try a on-land hitch plow as I am getting tired of sitting crooked all the time. So I might lean towards the White plow and see what I can find. Thanks again, Dave

Several years ago my dad had a 6 bottom White 598 plow. He had about the same problem of it wanting to pull to the side on occaations. He figured that when you changed the width of cut you also changed the line of draft. For example, you set the draft so it is correct for a 16" cut then set it to cut 18" it will want to pull off side. At 20" cut was worse. If he set the draft for 18" cut and change to 16" it would pull off side in the other direction. What was needed was a way to change the draft at the same time as the width of cut changed.

As to the 588 plow, we had a neighbor that had one, but he ran the tractor in the furrow. Once the plow is set up correctly it should work good. Personally I don't like an on land hitch unless you are pulling 7 bottoms or more.

Good luck.
