Mixing Brands of hydraulic fluid.

I have Ford, John Deere and IH tractors that I use common hydraulic implements with. I have been faithful in keeping the tractors filled with their respective brands of fluid.

Any ideas on what the mixing does long term?

The wrong oil in a John Deere will cause the brake linning to let go, you would be ahead to keep wet clutch oil, such as Deere torq Gard in every thing, it would be compatable with the other systems.

Tim,

That is what i am thinking, upgrade all of them to the highest standard. Will the Deere Hygard work in my Ford 6610, which also has wet brakes?

Before retireing sold oil for a major oil company. A customer had JD's and was buying there oil. I showed him on the bucket where it said distributed by JD. I told him to ask the JD dealer who was packageing their oil. He told me later it was Shell. That was 5 years ago. It could be a different company's oil today, but it will meet JD spec's. You will pay more for the same oil if it has JD, CIH or NH on the side of the bucket.

Some people say oil is oil! That is negotiable.

A hydraulic brake system on an automobile you better not put anything else in it other than brake fluid.

Any other fluid will cause all the rubber parts to swell and once the brakes are applied they won"t release.

The major components will need to be replaced such as the wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake calibers.

They can flush the system if the wrong oil hasn"t been in the system very long but it only takes a few minutes for all the rubber parts to swell.

A friend of mine has both Deere and IH tractors, and his implements are switched back and forth between tractors a lot.

He told me he ended with a 'chocolate milkshake' in the hydraulics of the Deere because of mixing oils. I've never heard of anyone else having that problem. Jim

Ford and Deere use the same oil spec.
Older IH's used Hy-Tran which likely had very similar properties with the exception of viscosity. It was lighter oil.
I'd guess that it would be fine with the heavier oil in the summer months but you might want lighter oil in the winter, or an oil heater.
Really, I'd think it would be fine.

Walmart TDH and other similar oils work here...

What's import is not the brand name or the price. Does it meet the manufacturer's spec? I buy my transhydraulic fluid at Costco and it meets just about everbody's spec. I have also used Universal Tractor Fluid(UTF) because I read the label and it meets everybody's spec.
