Baling the Long Hill

The Long Hill is a field that at one time only had one small oak tree.

Mowed this field many times as a teenager with my dad's Farmall Super C and 5ft Bush Hogtm rotary cutter.

Had <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoyPOin6HXQ"> a few onlookers </a> that were curious about all the noise.

We have twin fawns, two doe, and one young buck that frequent our fields.

Used <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMHhrjS0rG4">"Vernon"</a> our 56 model 70 gas tractor and the JD 350 sickle mower once again.

Mowing went really good; did not hit any pine trees!

The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UptigurqKAk">raking</a> duty went to "Uncle Earl" our 39B.

Baled with "No. 15" our 53 model 70 gas tractor and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEaqc2pXPgI">KRONE 125</a> 4x4 round baler.

Another beautiful weekend with nice, cool 90o weather with a light breeze.

Interesting how deer don't worry about a noisy tractor but leave quickly if they see a person walking around.

At the end of the posted video, I made at least three more videos of them.

Just sat there on the tractor and filmed them standing there looking at me.

I finally gave up the "stand off" and went about setting up to mow.

There is an old pear tree up at the Hunt place where they often go in the evenings.

Glad you enjoy the photos.

We've been very fortunate to get rainfall during July this summer.

Good to hear that you finally got some rain; we'll hope for your second hay crop.

The deer don't mind the tractors, and usually don't run from us much either. If we are driving around in a truck, they leave pronto. So they have learned what means trouble and what doesn't.

Got 2 in. Friday. Cut Sat, raked & baled Sunday, stacked early Monday. Got .22 Monday, more today, but I don't know how much yet.

Any rain in July in Tx. is a blessing.

We will sell these bales to folks in our community.

If we don"t sell it, then we"ll probably give it to our neighbor for his cattle.

This is Bahia grass, which is very common in our area.

Good for most livestock; not recommended for horses.

Glad you liked the photos.

James, my horses eat bahia grass all the time, I was wondering why you say it isn"t recommended for horses?

We don't sell the Bahia bales as "horse quality" hay.

I'll let Nancy explain:

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Hello, mlauk. My horses graze on bahaia also, but bahaia has a low palatability level (how digestible it is). If your horse is an "easy keeper" they will do well on it, but if they aren't, they will need a higher quality hay like coastal, timothy, etc. Even though our bahaia is clean (95% or better weed free) we don't sell the bahaia for horse hay.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

Hope this explains it a little better; probably should have used better words than "not recommended".
