Power needed to run a 7ft flail mower

Anyone have a idea what hp is needed to run a 7 ft flail mower? Thanks stan

Depending on the make and other variables flails usually use a little less power than a rotary. I'd say probably in the 40 to 55 PTO HP range. My dad sold a ton of Mott flails in the 70's and 80's. One contractor had a bunch of 88 inch super heavy Mott's behind MF 245 tractors of 42 PTO HP. He had a few on MF 255 tractors as well. A 255 could also handle a one sided hydraulic side drive interstator as well and a 265 could handle a side unit on both sides in addition to the rear 88 inch. Hope this helps. Other flails like Fords use more power than Mott(Alamo) flails. Dave

If you're going to run it in tall grass, I wouldn'g go less than 50 HP.

I ran my neighbors 7' cutditioner with my 1948 JD D for years. A good load for it but not excessive.
