I know this is off topic but I also know there are many of you out there that share the same hobbies as I do and growing pumpkins is one of my hobbies along with old tractors.

Can any one tell me what causes Sudden Death Syndrom in pumpkins. They look good one day and wilted and dying the next.

thanks for any advice.

Bought a cantelope at the store a few days ago and had it on the counter near the window to ripen a day or so. I bumped it and put a nick in it the other morning. Came back in the house about midday to a buzzing/humming. The kitchen was full of flies and that melon looked like a balloon that had been laying around. Flies had sucked it to where it was half gone...

did up a couple of the dead plants and check the tap roots to see if they have been eaten
they are called cutworms

Cut the stem of a wilted plant open near to the ground and you will likely find a worm or worms inside the stem. These are called squash vine borers. There is not much you can do to stop them since they are inside the plant. They can get into any squash related plant.

yep those borers will wreak havoc on cucurbits. If you see a little read flying bug about 1/4 inch long.. that is the moth the borer turns into... It is there to lay eggs..
