I will be taking 6 students from Columbus MT to Indianapolis for the National FFA convention in October. We have decided to take 1-94 across ND to Minneapolis and then head down to Waterloo IA and then through Peoria to Indianapolis.
We already have plans to see the John Deere visitor center in Moline.
Any ideas/suggestions on places to take the kids???

When I went to the national convention, it was still in Kansas City. We stopped at the Purina Research Farm outside St Louis. It was pretty neat, nice tour. It's not along your route, but's it's not out of the way for the trip either.

We also went up in The Arch in St Louis, but that isn't exactly farm related... pretty cool though.

Well since your from MT they will be thrilled at just flat land with no rocks!!! Went to the convention in 1972 the kids will have a great time Ed

Sense trains are a component of Ag transport, The Illinois Railway Museum (google it) is 1.5 miles off of I 90 in Northern Ill. Go south to 90 into Ill. do not stay on 94.
Get on 294 in Chicago, and go to I 65 to Indy.

When I was in FFA in the early 80s, we took a trip one year to the Chicago Borad of Trade and saw where they trade commodities.

I would highly recomend that. It is interesting and relevent to ag. Moreover, most of those kids have never been to the big city. It is a good educational experience.

Just south of Chicago on I65 there is a very large dairy farm, that has tours and is a great stop on your way, can't think of its name right now.

While I'm not familiar with the area at all I would suggest that you take them to a market garden if the majority have never been to one.

It is something that each of them can do to earn income without too much land or machinery input.

Anything from excess gardening to full scale veggies, melons, pumpkins, etc.

I agree that these are great opportunities for the kids. We have a farmer's market here in town and I have a few kids that sell produce/canned goods there.

Many of the Deere factories have tours (in Waterloo Tractor & Cab. in the Quad Cities... Davenport works (construction) Seeding, Harvester... Dubuque, Desmoines & Ottumwa are all with hours), you will need to schedule some. Corporate is a big hit as it really has more equipment to see than even the Pavilion. There are historical sites in the QC area as well as Grand Detour which is only about an hour from Corp. towards Chicago.

I went to National convention for the last 4 years it was in Kansas City. Loved the American Royal. I think moving to Louisville was a big mistake, and don't see Indy being any better. Seems the National FFA had a bunch of leadership that wanted to change things just for the sake of change.

Glad to hear it. Knowledge of raising vegetables whether just gardening or for selling some extra produce or for market gardening is a skill worth learning and can be done at any stage of life.

Market experience at a young age is beneficial as well.

Usually about half way across Iowa they can't believe there are that many people in the country and just want to go home where it's not so crowded.
