01 F-150 exhaust

why do they have 2 cat. converters on each side and can someone put 1 larger universal in place of the 2? I know I will have to cut and weld it together but will it work?

I have seen it done but the CHECK ENGINE light would always stay on.

If you like a really sweet sounding truck, here is what I had done to my 05 F150: Muffler shop cut off the pipe just in front of muffler leaving both cats on. Came rest of way back with duals with no muffler. Cats reduce sound somewhat and every guy that rode with me loved it. Never had any check engine light issues. Traded for a 09 recently. Have not messed with it. It only has 1 cat (I think, but I have not crawled under it).

There are sensors in each one on each side, for a total of 4 sensors. Around here you have to pass the inspection, which means all 4 sensors have to be working as designed. Tom

that has already been done on this truck but I hate it and it is a friends truck. I outgrew that straight pipe years ago.I do however enjoy the sound of a tuned muffler that lets a engine breath and talk a little.

Had an 93 and cut the back one off and left the front. No dash lights came on.

A 93 does not have catalyst monitoring. If the converter were removed completely, the PCM wouldn't know or care. An 01 has after cat O2 sensors, so you can't eliminate the cats on each bank and go with one down stream without the check engine light on. The other concern would be if you have to pass an emissions test/inspection. The exhaust system has to be the way it was originally from the converters forward. Only EPA approved parts can be substituted like headers that maintain all pollution controls.

I did say 2 on each side so a total of 4 unless they are not both cat. converters. I think maybe he has other problems and fuel was not getting burned and that is the reason for the glow on the pipe and converter. I know it was not running right so now he is replacing the spark plug boots and we will go from there. I am also sure the raw fuel getting to the converter will make it fail sooner.
