OT FYI---- 2007 and newer diesel truck oil issues

Just an FYI only. I see a lot of discussions and opinions (right and wrong) on here about oils. I'm in the lube business so I came across this the other day. There are potential problems with the way the emissions systems on the newer diesel trucks work. They spray a small amount of diesel at the end of the exhaust stroke to "wash" or regenerate the emissions system. This has increased the possibility of washing of the cylinder walls and fuel dilution of the oil. Be careful to not extend your oil drain intervals too long on these engines. Even the premium synthetics (like Amsoil) do not recommend going beyond 3x OEM changes on these engines. There are a couple of the newer CAT engines that they do not recommend going beyond the OEM interval at all. I know some folks push oil change intervals but its not a good idea with the newer diesels. JUST thought I'd pass this info on.

Well, let's see.

Three times the OEM recommendation would be right at 30,000 miles. Yep, I'm over by 4K miles. :>)

Study your space heater this winter to understand just how that diesel fuel ignites. :>)

INCASE is right about the oil change intervals. Also, you must use CJ-4 rated oil. CJ-4 is low ash. The DPF (exhaust filter) is cleaned by incineration of soot. The ash left over does not burn. All diesels consume some oil and using a high ash oil speeds the filling of the DPF with ash.

I think thats where is info is getting mixed up. The DPF usues diesel to clean itself out.(Which is why the milage sucks on the newer diesels) The problem isnt extended drains, the problem is the EGR valves. They do not vent the air outside the engine and the conatimenants stay in the engine. The oil is "suppose" to fix the problem, which is one of the jobs of the oil. My 08 has the egr bypassed, and my oil is almost as clean now as it was when I changed it 3000 miles ago.
