Driving down the highway a few weeks ago I noticed all the ponds close to the road were full because its been so wet this year and had some green slime on them.A week or so later I passed the same pond close to the road and it was empty??About 40 miles away a few days later I noticed another pond that was about the same size, empty? There was no damage to the dam,it was like it was drained out of the bottom of the pond, like it has a drain in the bottom of it.One was close to Richmond,Mo and the other was close to another town, maybe Higginsville,Mo.I went by the same pond at Richmond yesterday and its was dry as a bone with grass growing down the inside of the dam as far as I could see. There doesnt seem to be any irrigation going on in those places.Surely cities dont use pond water,do they?Other towns have water treatment plants, but even smaller towns have lakes compared to those ponds. No factories close either. Both ponds are away from anything except a field of beans.I dont understand.

Might be containment ponds. Fill up when it rains and drain slowly to slow down run off, usually around someplace with a big paved area.

The only paved area would be the road and between the road and the ponds is a ditch to carry water off from the road. Both places are away from any pavement and right next to a field. There is nothing else around except maybe a pipeline further up the road maybe a mile is where a pipeline comes out of the ground like they do in lots of places, and goes back down in the ground.Right where the pond is there is nothing except trees and a field below the pond.

Hey Trucker,
It's the govenment man. Like they control everything now dude. Those weren't ponds those are secret experiments.. Glad to see you still have time to enjoy life on the road.
Did ya get your shot yet better hurry ya could die ya know!!!
Hey just kidding. I think they had to be containment ponds of some sorts. My pond not drying up at all. Normal level

Farmer

You know I had to rub my eyes and look again the first time! Then when I saw the other one I slowed way down and took a good look. Its also rained a couple of times since then and still dry?My guess is that it goes in that pipeline maybe, but I dont know anything about a pipeline or why a pond would drain into it.

They may have been freshwater prawn ponds. We drained our ponds and harvested shrimp this past weekend. I know of some growers are that are located in Vandalia, Des Arc and Laddonia, Mo. that are a sub-chapter to the Shawnee Prawn Growers Association here in Southern Illinois.

Can't say for sure but in my area of Missouri there are a lot of hatcher ponds and if that is what they are that is normal because of the fish harvest

The detension ponds and the retension ponds are used a lot to control heavy rain in areas that do not have adequate drainage for the water to all dissapear at one time to hold it and let it dissapear slowly. A rain that would need a 10" tile to handle it with either type will let the water out slowly thru possible 4-5" tile without it blowing up the tile from overpressure. And a detension pond will have grass covering the complete bottom while a retension pond holds a couple of feet of water at all times with the sides grass covered.

Right past highway T overpass on the north side of 210.I came by in a pickup instead of a big truck today and if you blink you will miss it in a pickup. In a big truck you can see almost to the bottom of it,and the bean field behind it.There are trees on both sides.I didnt find the other one today but it is either by Higginsville or Lexington, not sure which, almost straight south of Richmond but on highway 24 or 13.I looked on hwy 24 but might have missed it.When I find it again I know its the same size and shape as the one by Richmond but I think it has a little water left in it.

Up this way the water table recedes considerably in the late summer / early fall. When the snow melts in spring it also rises quite a bit.

All of the ponds I see except the 2 that are empty are completely full. Its been like that before here, but not for quite a while.Usually they are down some by now.One thing is there is hardly no livestock any more, and this has been a wet year. There are other ponds in the same town that are full.People are combining beans instead of picking corn because its so wet still.
