new 49 A owner - some questions

Hi,

I bought my first 2 cylinder tractor(49 A) recently and have some questions. The previous owner used plain water in the radiator and would drain it out after it cooled off each time he used it. The radiator is new. I decided to use 50/50 antifreeze. After taking it out for a couple of rides some coolant is coming out the overflow pipe. Is the cooling system burping air causing coolant to spill out into the overflow? The coolant is still close to the top in the radiator. The carb was sweating after going for a ride in 50 F weather. It had rained during the night and the air was somewhat humid. Is this normal?

The overflow is likely for two reasons. First water expands as it heats, and if you fill the radiator cold, as the water warms up it will overflow to some degree. "Burping" air out of the system is also possible. Just run it without refilling it until the water level settles down. As long as the top of the radiator core is covered, you're good to go.

The carb sweating is also normal. The process of "vaporizing" the gas (not what actually happens, but the best description I can think of at the moment) chills the carb, so on a warm, moist day it'll condense water out of the air on the outside of the carb. In extreme cases you can actually get frost on the carb.

its normal for some antifreeze to come out the overflow when the radiator is full,it should find its own level.(as long as it stays above the tubes in the core) bill m.

did you mix the water and antiafreeze before you put it in the rad. that tractor does not have a water pump and the water and antiafreeze will not mix

Thurlow: Is that you? If it is, you spin some mighty fine yarns. I was wondering what you were doing in your retirement. (;>))

Great. That's the way I always envisioned you. Spinning yarns to little kids, accent and all. Of course, you'll say: "What accent?" (;>))
