OT: Thinking About Cutting Firewood

It's almost that time of year to start thinking about cutting firewood for the winter.

I do have an old cross-cut saw very similar to Red's.

Getting one of the JD 70's "fitted" for a log splitter; photos and video to follow later.

I had a friend fab a splitter to run off my Case VA's loader hydraulics (no quick couplers, just unthread the hose and close the circuit). Works beautifully through everything I've thrown at it, but we don't have the hardwoods that are further south near you.
Trouble is, I think we'll be looking to sell the little orange one, so I'll have to get some proper couplers on that splitter, or a find a B&S 5hp engine and power pack to put on the splitter. Maybe I'll put some pics up on the photos section.

This forum is a good place to post your photos; more folks will probably see them.

Plus you will get all sorts of suggestions on how to improve your log splitter.

james, are you building your own splitter? pto pump or off the tractor hydraulics? i built one for my farmall b, run a prince pto pump, 2200 psi, 22 gpm i think, runs the splitter real good!!

Custom designed splitter was built back in the early Spring by a young man that has done a lot of welding repair/fab for us.

Using a new 5in. cylinder with hydraulic control lever using Model 70 tractor hydraulics.

We'll see how it works off the tractor hydraulics first; then will convert to PTO pump if necessary.

Since the cylinder was factory red, more or less felt obligated to paint the frame light grey/silver color.

The color combo of red & silver makes it almost as ugly as my stepmother.

If I ever decide to sell it, then will repaint it green & yellow to double its value.

We had a very large oak tree go down last winter.

It was all cut to length and brought to the house.

Some of the larger pieces have not been split.

We had another large oak tree die this summer.

It will definetly be next winters(10-11) wood.

Thankfully we will have a lot of good split oak for a few winters to come.

(quoted from post at 13:55:42 10/20/09) I believe you are supposed to have this winters(09-10)wood cut and be working on next winters(10-11) wood.

That would be my thought as well.

I have found that it saves you an ENORMOUS amount of trouble to cut and season wood 1 year in advance. More than than that and then you start to have more trouble to deal with, but still better than green wood.

Thanks ever so, James- now I'm gonna waste a couple hours watching Red Green clips. Well, I didn't much want to do any real work today, anyhow. . .

That clip had a surprise ending- nothing went wrong!!!

I was posting one of my tractor related videos yesterday and this Red Green vidoe was shown over to the left.

Being a Red Green fan, I just couldn't resist watching it.

Well much like you said, on and off for about an hour, I sat here and watched Red Green videos laughing as quietly as possible not to draw attention.

Not ashamed to admit that I have a roll of duct tape in the middle desk drawer next to the WD40 here at the office.
