Vacuum in fuel tank

I have a JD 5310 55HP tractor with a plastic fuel tank. When I run the tractor hard, it pulls a vacuum on the tank, causing the top to sag down. I have changed the fuel filter by the engine and drained about one quart of fuel from the bottom of the tank (it was clear). This started within the last six months. What is causing this? Is there some other filter I need to be looking at? Someone told me there was another filter around the fuel tank, but I cannot find it or any reference to another filter in my maintenance manual. Anyone have any ideas?

You need an air vent in the tank somewhere. This may be plugged or the fuel cap for some reason is not venting. If you are creating a vacuum, eventually you will damage something.

You've got to have some kind of vent.... Can you leave the cap a little loose and see what happens? If you can and there are no side effects, I'd drill a very small hole on the cap and call it fixed. That's just me though.

not familiar with that tractor model but i do know that you need your return fuel going to the tank, thats what i would be looking for.i have seen this very same thing happen.i would think that the cap should be vented.

Like previous poster have stated, you need a vent. Not sure where Deere vented this model,IH vented the 86 and 50 series with a plastic tube that made a u turn up the leg of cab and down under fender. They could plug quite easily causing that sucked in fuel tank you see a lot on those models.

does your tractor have a cab,if so there should be a vent-overflow line on the tank that could be plugged.without a cab there are differant caps that were used.
go to www.jdparts.com and locate your tractor in parts catalog search.there are us models, european, asian and india models so cant tell you exactly which one you have

Bio-diesel? We have to clean the vents on the fuel tanks about once a year, they plug up with some black goo and they will suck the sides of the tank in.

I finally found the problem last night. There is a "vent" located behind the fuel tank (covered up by a "slow vehicle" sign. This vent (JD part number R237815) was completrely blocked and the drain hose was missing. This vent is a one way value with a small spring which is broken. I have ordered a replacement, it should be here in a few days.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
