Billy, I was in a Marine Attack Squadron, VMA-533, doing carrier quals aboard the Sara in 1956 out of Mayport when the ship itself was still in shakedown.

Can't believe the old gal has already been retired. Although I was once deployed to the Mid East aboard the carrier Lake Champlain and the "Champ" no longer exists. It's been recycled.

5 years in from 2000-2005. HMLA-269 1 tour in iraq and a few months in haiti. Rode aboard the Ponce and Saipan. Wonderfull accomadation to be on as we made are way to the gulf
 
BUMMER, never saw so many sick Marines as when we took them out on the Fort Marion LSD-22 (1959-1962). Took weeks to get the smell of Vomit off the ship after they left. Giggle
Got a great story about making a landing with a new Lieutenant, green as ever giving orders to everyone even the boat crew. made me mad when he started telling me what my job was, so I stop the boat out a ways from shore dropped the bow door and when he jumped out he went in over his head. Had a nice swim to shore. Bet he never gave orders to the boat crew after that.

Once at Atsugi, Japan, a brand new 2nd Lieutenant and I had occasion to go to the Navy side of the base. We completed our business, then went to the PX for a cup of coffee, browsed the PX, and finally got back to the squadron about an hour later than we should have.

When we alit from the Jeep, the Lieutenant said, very officiously, "Sergeant, if anyone asks where you were, tell them you were with me".

He thought for a second and said, "On second thought, Sarge, if anyone asks me where I was, I'll tell them I was with you. You probably pull more weight in this outfit than I do".

Him, I liked.
 
Goose I was in ch-53's[HMH=363] and VMFA-232 73-77. The last F-4 from the red devils is in the air and space museum at the smithsonian Semper Fi
