New laptop decisions

Well, the time has come for a new laptop. I don"t know where to even start, there are so MANY choices! I mainly do internet searching & occasional pictures. Don"t need anything too fancy. Any suggesions on brand, megabytes, etc? I am looking for the best buy for my $$. Thanks

The Toshiba Satellite T3400 is around at several discount sellers. Often you can buy it for $400 and for that, it's a steal.

We have two and they've been great. Fast, lots of memory and have wireless LAN and CD/DVD burner.

TOSHIBA Satellite L305-S5921 NoteBook Intel Pentium dual-core T3400(2.16GHz)
15.4" Wide XGA 2GB Memory DDR2 800 160GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi burner and reader.
Intel GMA 4500M - paid $399.99

I did real well with used IBM from E-bay. Pick model with what you need. Most are the same as new from large companies.

get the biggest hard drive and most memory, a lot of lesser priced computers are underpowered on memory which will make the computer slower and the hard drive work harder. the computer I am using right now is an acer 4730z, it has a 250 g hard drive and 3g memory. I have had no problems with it yet, had it since April this year, gave 450 for it, bought a compaq for the wife in August, 350, has faster processor, bigger hard drive and I think the same memory. shop around for the best deal.

I cant give any recommends as I am in the same boat as you - time to upgrade from my Compaq desktop that can about run Windows 98 - But I think in a week or 2 you will see some good sales for Christmas shoppers coming up.

I've had dell, toshiba, gateway, compaq, acer and a few others, never had i got more than a 1-1.5 years out of them before the hinges failed, motherboards cracked, batteries died, or generally fell apart.

Then i bucked up for a IBM R61, and its going on 2 years now and the battery last as long as every, screen is still attached (sturdy external aluminum hinges, no plastic) and it still is in generally good shape.

If any of my software and hardware worked with an Apple, and they were somewhat easy to find things for.... I might think for a second about trying one.

I would go for a pc with Windows 7, 64 bit home premium, quad processor, at least 3 gbytes RAM and a hard drive at 7200 rpm and large enough for your needs (pictures, video's, or documents). For screen, I like the higher quality display unless you are going to use an external monitor and docking station. If just the laptop, I like the 17" display. Costco or SAM's club offer an extra year of warranty.
