Authorities say a rural Oakes, North Dakota man died from injuries after he fell off the top of a grain bin on a farm near Oakes on Friday afternoon. Forty-two-year-old Paul Allen Schmitz was working on a farm about one mile south of Oakes outside the city limits. He was transported to the Community hospital in Oakes following the accident.

Schmitz and his family were long time supporters of the North Dakota Winter Show cattle auction along with FFA and 4-H activities.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Oakes at 1 p.m .

Very tragic news. I used to work at a shop that built large oilfield tanks. I had to help one of the labourers on top of a tank. He was allowed to wear running shoes because work boots were too slippery on the steel. We used a bucket truck to get on the tank that was controlled from the ground. After a wrench fell off the tank, there was no one around to lower us down. The laborourer was also a daredevil, he ran down the narrow boom of the bucket truck to retrieve the wrench! After he got someone to lift him back up, he said I had to go down if we need something else. Not in a million years!!! Dave
