I raised some hens this year for the first time since my dad died and I"ve wanted to expand my flock. I only have one left out of the six and Im supposed to get a rooster soon.

So I want to expand my flock if they survive the winter...they don"t like going inside their coop.

How many of you have had Buckeyes and where is a reputable place to get them that doesn"t charge a premium for them? I"ve seen a website that charges 100 bucks for 25 straight run chicks and thats a bit much for my pocket book.

I"m used to RI/NH Reds, Leghorns in the past. I"ve thought about getting some Plymouth Rocks too.

As with any rare breed you need to watch who you buy from. Sometimes the price reflects how pure the breed is.

I did a search on another site I visit and came up with this..........

I think they are getting their stock from Meyer.

I did notice they said the buckeye is the only breed created solely by a woman.

Yeah but I know rare as hens teeth transfer into a reason to charge a premium price. I live in Ohio and they look pretty interesting.
