well I posted about a year ago about getting high speed internet, the phone company wanted almost 500 bucks to run a new line, well I guess they don't have to now, so it is only going to cost 100 bucks to hook up now ,and 30 bucks a month after it's hooked up,Imagine that!! Wonder what happened?

I'll bet that a large company or alot of people moved into the neighborhood to make it worth thier while either that or you touched nerve high up.
consider yourself lucky I still have dialup.

They are hurting for business. I was told if you complain enough about the hook up fee they will drop some off or even give it to you for free.. It would be worth a shot.

Check with your cell phone providers. Their service may be faster than dial-up. Locally it is faster than satellite, but am stuck with for another year by contract.

I work for a rural telephone coop. Getting internet to a house sometimes requires a new house drop -rarely but sometimes. Chances are they upgraded equipment that allows for them to push the signal farther or your area became more populated to the point where internet service was more feasible and profitable

Same thing happened here a year ago. Couldnt pay enough to get high speed and then along comes DSL from the phone co. I think they are trying to save their land line business which they tie to the DSL. We have 2 iphones and the land line would be gone if not for the DSL internet.

RossIL, is it true that you can't push DSL thru repeater coils & therefore it a house is over about 2 1/2 miles from the last amplifier/exchange that such house is out of luck for service?

Here in PA, they passed a law saying everyone will have access to high speed internet within the next two years. Part of the infrastructure upgrade plan, I guess. Maybe it's the same in your state?

I'm located 2-1/4 miles from one of the tel co's central offices. DSL barely worked until they re-tuned the load coils and mounted some extra panels in my basement.
Typical downloads of 140K which certainly beats 3-4K on dialup.
Pinging the central office will peak at 800K upload and 4 meg download.
