A ton of feathers is heavier then a ton of gold because gold is measured by the troy lb and feathers a standard lb.
I.E. there is only 12 ounces to the lb of gold but there is 16 ounces to the lb of feathers so the feathers are in fact heavier

What the heck kind of question is that? 12oz of feathers weigh the same as 12oz of gold. 16 oz of gold weighs the same as 16 oz of feathers. A ton of gold weighs the same as a ton of feathers.

Gotta compare apples with apples??

A US ton equals 2,430 pounds if gold (Troy)
A US ton equals 2,000 pounds if feathers

Both are the same weight. There is no "Troy" ton.

A Troy ounce of gold weighs MORE then a regular ounce of feathers. Troy ounce is 480 grains, whereas a regular ounce is 437.5 grains.

A Troy pound of gold weighs less then a regular pound of feathers.

Not true. There are three standard tons and all are slightly different. Metric ton, long ton (UK), and
short ton (USA). USA ton is the lightest.

So, a long ton of feathers weighs more than a short ton of gold (or anything else).

Well then is the standard holds true it takes 200lbs to make a ton so a troy ton if used which ya may not be but if it was used would make a ton of gold less lbs then a ton of feathers. But I did not know there was not a troy ton but I can see why since that would be a lot of $$ in gold

Yep and that is why a pound of feathers do in fact weigh more then a pound of gold but it is a trick sort of question since few people think about the different measure systems for gold and other stuff

Actually, there are several more - but I was trying to avoid getting too convoluted. There is a Portugese ton, a Spanish ton, a French ton, etc. And they are all slightly different.

I can't say I ever had to worry too much what gold weighed, regardless if in Troy ounces or USA ounces.

Now, gallons gets me more confused since the Canadian government takes USA built cars and shows better fuel MPGs when tested in Canada? Why? Because the Canadian gallon is bigger then the USA gallon. Makes things look better on paper.

In Canada we use the imperial gallon which is 1.20095 US gallons.

Then there's the metric system to figure out...I was unfortunate enough to have been caught in the middle when we switched over in Canada. As a result, some things I need to know in imperial measurement, others in metric.

For instance, I can relate to getting 20 mpg....but tell me a car gets 8.4 litres per 100 km and ya lost me...

Straight distance measurement for me has to be km, though.

Weight? Gotta be in pounds. (although, it sounds better after Christmas to weigh myself in kilograms rather than pounds...

Temperature? Celsuis all the way. For instance, I just shot my laser thermometer I have beside me at the ice in my rye. 0.6 deg C. That tells me I'd better drink up - she's starting to melt!

There is no such thing as a "troy ton". What we normally call a "ton" is 2000 avoirdupois pounds. A "ton" of feathers weighs the same as a "ton" of gold.

Now, if you had asked whether a pound of feathers is heavier than a pound of gold, that would be a different thing. One troy pound is .82 avoirdupois pounds, so a pound of feathers is indeed heavier than a pound of gold.

On the other hand a troy ounce is 1.1 avoirdupois ounces, so an ounce of gold is "heavier" than an ounce of feathers.

Would you agree that we should just bite the bullet and switch to the metric system? Like we were supposed to thirty years ago?
