Was resently given a near new Kerosene Heater. Thought ok I'll use it in the evenings at the house to help save a little propane. Had a 5 gallon can of kerosene from last year I used to start the backyard fire pit with so after I used it up I went to get some more! Place I bought it at last year stopped selling it? Thought ok I'll try down the road, Nope don't sell it anymore! Ended up going to 5 different places and they all quit selling it? Has something happened that I've missed ? I know it had become very expensive last year but can't understand what has happened to cause everyone to quit selling it! Any Ideas?

Nobody uses it anymore. I see it at Home Depot type places in 5 gallon containers. About 5 bucks a gallon.

Our local bulk fuel distributer sells "K" kerosene - bring your own container.

Haven't priced it lately, but I'm sure it's pretty expensive.

I have a friend who was using diesel fuel in one. He thought he was saving some money. Every nail head in his sheetrock developed a little dot of soot. Reminded me of the holes in a saltine cracker. Momma made him repaint the whole house.

Why would those nail heads soot up like that?? I can't figure that out.

SE Indiana and SW Ohio still have plenty of places that sell kerosene. The Sunoco station on South State Street in Harrison, Ohio even has it on their sign.

Please do yourself, your health, and safety a big favor and DON'T USE this thing in the house.

I installed and maintained HVAC/ refrigeration, and serviced gas, LP, oil, and electric and heat pumps for "a few" years. This is known as an "unvented" appliance. In our area, the codes do not even ALLOW either LP/ or nat gas unvented appliances, either of which are safer than those oilers.

Kerosene heaters are best left for emergency backup heat for when the power fails.
As previously stated the local airport sells Jet A-1 kerosene cheaper than anybody else.

The city where I live will let you buy kerosene heaters all day long but they won't allow the sale of the fuel. One must go out of town to get it if they want some. Out of town meaning over the bridge into the adjoining town. I will pass however.

Real sad situation.. I know poor folks that shiver and try to heat with Kero... They are spending more than many people here pay for all the power bill.. Kero pump here is almost 4 dollars a gallon.. When you figure that there is no road tax, it is a crime to price Kero at that.. Or at least it should be..

Every country store has kerosene here.2.79 near me.A vented heater with wick burners still works fine.I used to keep a cellar from freezing with a vented heater.I used 1 gal in 24 hours.Kerosene was 15 cents a gallon.Out side fuel tanks have to use kerosene or a blend to avoid jelling.Plenty of kerosene in use here.

The market for kerosene has really dried up. People just aren't buying kerosene heaters. Within fifteen miles of me, there are only three or for gas stations that carry it in bulk. That's out of a couple of hundred stations in the area. You can buy it at most hardware stores in a gallon can for an outrageous price.

you can still get it around here. Make sure your container is Blue though. They can't sell it to you if your going to put it in a red container as that means your using it as on road fuel. You can however fill up your red torpedo heater directly from the pump. Gov people are so stupid!

The color of the container is for safety. Red containers are only to be used for gasoline. If you think this is nonsense, consider what would happen if you accidentally refilled your torpedo heater with gasoline because your gas and kerosene containers were the same color.

Assuming 100% efficiency for a non vented heater which is unrealistically high.
One US gallon of kerosene with 135,000 btu's of energy. Has equal heat to 39.6Kw hrs of electricity.
In round numbers that one gallon of kerosene is worth $4.00 of electricity at 10cents per Kw/hr.$6.00 of electricity at 15 cents and $8.00 of electricity at 20 cents.

A 1500W heater makes 5100btu per hour for a measly 15,22.5 or 30 cents per hour. That's enough heat to keep most rooms or work shop bench areas habitable.

Lets also consider the electricity can function on a stat or timer.
Uses no oxygen from the room.
Doesn't require cold air to be vented in and warm air vented out of the room.
The electrical "tank" doesn't run empty, can run for weeks unatended.
No wicks to replace. No splash, spill and re-filling.
No open flame fire hazard.
No time or fuel spent driving around for kerosene.
Does your insurance company know about the kerosene heater?

Add 30% to 100% to the kerosene price to compete head to head with electricity.

The nail heads collected soot because they are colder than the surrounding sheet rock. Since the nails are driven into the studs, heat from the nail is conducted to the outside wall. That causes moisture to condense on the nails, which in turn picks up soot. It doesn't help that the unvented heater converts kerosene into carbon dioxide and water. Burn a few gallons of kerosene and you've effectively dumped a bunch of water inside your house.

I dought any reputable FBO will sell you K-1 in a container.. The FAA would pull their license in a heartbeat!
K-1 is not the same as kerosene you burn in a heater
pour some on your arm, hand, and see how fast you wash it off

Different around here. As long as you don't ask for the airport's fuel nozzel to be stuck into a highway vehicle's tank. They will sell your all the 100LL and Jet A-1 you can pay cash for.

K1 is a low sulphur kerosene. It was hard to find until the import kerosene heaters were sold here .Range oil was common but it stunk if used in lamps and lanterns.I keep 2 gallons of K1 on hand for my lamps.I can feed it to my furnace if My tank runs out.I have unloaded at lot of 4 ft wood by the light of a kerosene lantern. My JD tractor can run on kerosene.

And those nozzles are about a couple inches in diameter and won't fit a standard can. They can put out a gallon in a few seconds too.

When I was growing up in the 40s my mother had a wood fired cook stove and a 2 burner Perfection stove that she cooked on in summer time.Perfection oil stoves are still being made and are very high priced. There are many people who refuse to give up the old ways. Some Amish have settled in the town of Unity. They are building new homes with wood furnaces in them.I see one fellow often who goes to the store with a horse and buggy. The women wear long dresses at their vegetable stand.Millions of people have used unvented heaters.I picked up a fellow who was hitch hiking with a 5 gal can.He was out of work because of muddy conditions. He could not get oil deliveries because the state decided his 50 gal drum was illegal.I left him at the corner store and made sure he got a ride back.I am fed up with laws that do more harm than good.
