O/T removing rust from a concrete floor

(quoted from post at 21:22:03 12/29/09) Any good suggestions? Is the basement floor. Thanks in advance. J.

Most likely the rust is coming from water that is collecting and then drying, leaving the iron on the floor. If possible a pressure washer would work the best. If not try a 2% solution of muriatic acid. If that does not get it work it up slowly to 10%. Make sure you allow some ventilation when using the acid in a confined area

If there is water seeping through the walls onto the slab, a good cement sealer will help prevent it in the future. If it is seeping in from beneath the slab (meaning no vapor barrier was put down before the pour) a sealer might work, but no guarantee.

(quoted from post at 22:54:25 12/29/09) Problem was the sump pump gave up the ghost.

That will do it. If you seal it with a good concrete sealer it will prevent it in the future. Problem is it is pricey. About $20 to $25 per 200 sqft of floor.

Try scrubbing it with some CLR. Follow ventilation guidelines.Might work. Does wonders removing Calcium,Lime and Rust as it's name emplies.

Yep, it contains oxalic acid which is a powder form, little bit on a wet cloth or mop and it will remove the toughest rust stains

Had a problem with rust stains in the dishwasher where I lived about 20 years ago. Used Oxalic Acid crystals and ran the dishwasher through a cycle. Cleaned it up first time through. I have used it for different things since then, including removing rust stains from my basement floor. I bought the stuff at a drug store; don"t know if it"s still available that way.
