Need info on Goodman Mfg HVAC products

Ever have one of those days? It"s looking to be one of the coldest weeks on record around here and I just discovered that the heat exchanger on my 15 year old gaspak has a gaping hole in it along with a good amount of corrosion. Looks like the piece that swirls the flame got overheated/damaged somehow and caused the flame to concentrate where it shouldn"t and it did some serious damage. Take that along with the fact that the AC coil has a minor leak somewhere and has to be charged every couple of years and it"s time for something new. So I"m in the market for a new gaspak/AC combo and was looking at the ones by Goodman. I remember seeing some stuff on them on here in the past, and I"m thinking it was positive, but a search didn"t bring up any of the old posts. I know they have a pretty good warranty at 20 years on their heat exchangers so I like that, and their new stuff is using the R410 vs the old R22 which meets the new federal mandate for 2010 so that"s good. What I need to know is have any of you looked into them yourself and/or have one of their systems in use? If so what do you think of it as far as price, reliability, etc. Basically any pros or cons about them would be greatly appreciated. Too any HVAC guys out there that know of any other "reliable" brands that have good warranties and will last please feel free to speak up. This is a BIG purchase at any time but especially when times are when times are what they are and money is tight as it is, so I want to spend my money as wisely as possible.
Until them I"ve got a heat pump handling upstairs, my insert lit and heating and plenty of wood, and a couple of the oil filled heaters in the other rooms so at least we"re warm.
THANKS for any info you can provide.

I put a whole house goodman in when I built new 9 years ago and have yet to have a problem. For the price it can't be beat.

I looked up Goodman and it made the top 5 heat pumps at number 3 . do it yourself type in heat pump rankings

The Goodman's are a good, reasonably priced basic unit if that's what you are looking for. Parts are more reasonable than other brand's for the most part & they are easier to work on than the high end unit's. Buy you unit from a local contractor as an internet purchase void's the warranty. Bell's and whistles cost a lot more & that's what the big name companies are pushing.

Hi Wayne,
A couple years back I was in the same place you are... below zero weather and no heat. Did some quick research on Goodman products and bought one from an outfit called Alpine Air. Excellent prices, excellent customer service and lightning fast delivery. They even have a list of "preferred" HVAC guys if you need someone to install your equipment. As I mentioned, we've had ours up and running for nearly two years now... absolutely perfect! ...D

I installed a Goodman LP furnace and AC unit about 6 years ago. I really like the variable speed fan control that allows for a slow, gentle continuous air circulation for better air cleaning. No problems with any of the system.

Two stories on brands;

Installed two Goodman units in our 100 year old house 7 years ago and have not had a minutes trouble with them. Price was very reasonable.

Installed Trane into parent house about 10 years ago and had to have a blower fan motor replaced last week. You can only put Trane parts in a Trane unit, they will not accept universial parts, fan motor alone was over $400. Not a bad unit but the repair and parts are very pricey.

I was a do-it-yourselfer and installed the Goodman myself but I know where I can buy universial parts a whole lot cheaper than Trane.

Either units are good, just look at costs down the road.

OK Wayne, where are you located? I buy Goodman ffrom Johnstone in Asheville but the are other Johnstones around the state. I have installed Goodman units for over twenty years and have had only one compressor go baD. tHAT WAS BECAUSE THE lADY WOULDN'T BUY A NEW AIR HANDLER that was full of junk and even then the unit ran 4 yrs and 11 month and I was able to warranty it and install a new air handler aT the same time. Goodman parts are always available,I firmly believe its the best uy on the market and are more reliable than most. Just installed 7 units in our new church and the efficiency is oustanding. Let me know if I can help Henry [email protected]

I've had a 93% efficient Goodman gas furnace in my house for 5 years now. I also installed one 4 yrs ago in my rent house. That one was 95% efficient. Anyway, they are cheap on gas, the ignition air is piped in from the outside direct to the furnace and the exhaust goes out a PCV pipe. Never had a problem with either. Both are on propane. Makes my supplier sick since he seldom comes for a fill-up. Lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. Best price out there. Enjoy!

Hey Henry, I live outside of Concord, not too far from Concord Motorsports Park. Any ideas who around me I could buy from direct? I can buy as a business so doing something as a "individual" shouldn't be an issue unless it's made into one. Admittedly I don't have the knowledge yet to hook up and properly charge a split system but a precharged package unit is a cake walk. Plus I plan to rework the main power wiring as well as the thermostat wiring and make them a little more user/mower/weedeater friendly than was done on the existing unit. The main thing is I need to save as much $$$ as possible as I haven't really worked in nearly three months and savings are drying up quick. You know the saying when it rains it pours...... Anyways any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. My direct email is [email protected]
Thanks, Wayne

My choice would be Carrier Gaspak. Thats what we had installed 5 years ago and yearly inspections show no problems. It gets no rest here in arizona. Right now it is in furnace mode and is running. 75% of the year it is in cooling mode and gets a real work out in the summer.

have had two good mans both have been good units. Keep a inighter on hand. Had to get one New Years eve a few years ago. A common repair

Never owned Goodman but I had a new complete Maytag heat pump system put in several years ago and learned a some interesting facts.
I recieved quotes and suggestions from 4 different companies. Maytag was the only system with a 10 year compressor, parts, and labor warranty. Even the highly advertised units only give 10 years compressor and 5 years parts, with only one year labor. I found that in direct conflict with their fancy and expensive TV ads featuring the guy in the derby hat. If you truly build the best, you can afford to place a strong warranty behind it.
I heard all good things about Goodman, except from the guy that sells the highly advertised brand, he does not sell Goodman.
You may be surprised at who builds the compressors for some of the highly advertised units. What you are really getting is the same compressors with a flashy unit and of course, that incredibly effective TV advertising.
Why do we still believe TV ads when we have been dupped so many times?

NCW- can't speak about their heating units but I had their 3.5Ton central A/C system installed about 10-12 years ago and it was substantially cheaper than competitors (to the point of being almost too cheap) but I took a chance based on their reputation and it has given excellent service. No problems so I don't know how well their warranty works, that's a good thing!!
