OT paint on roof shingles

Thinking about painting my roof black to help keep my building warm. At least make use of what solar heat is available. It has asphalt shingles and I have a sprayer and free paint so cost is not an issue. Will it ruin the shingles?
Anyone done something like this?

That's a new one on me.

The gravely surface of your shingles washes off over time. If you have light-colored shingles, they're going to look pretty bad in a couple of years.

you can paint if you like do not expect to last more than 2 years. You will not notice much in the heating aspect in the winter due to snow on the roof if the snow melts off before other buildings you are loosing heat from inside, then you should install insulation on the inside. but you will get the heat on the inside in the summer from the black paint and your shingles life span will be shortened. also warranty will be voided.

The black stain on light colored is a fungus or moss,Usually on the north side only.Notice that the shingles will be clean below lead flashed chimneys and antenna mounts.Light colored shingle wont get as hot as black in summer.A strip of zinc or bare copper wire run along the ridge will keep the fungus from forming. There are sprays that will kill moss on shingles.A coat of aluminum paint will make shingles last longer.I had 5 gallons of aluminum roof coating that I put on the barn stable roof. The shingles that were coated looked much better when we put on new shingles.Put a white shingle and a black shingle in the sun for a while.Touch each one after a few hours in the sun. Most people are going to metal roofing here because new shingles are not lasting.

whoever thinks black shingles wont transfer heat inside has never been in a Texas attic in the summertime...i doubt paint will last very long.

It may heat the attic , but the insulation in the attic will stop the heat from going into the lower portion of the home. It will also probably make the home harder to cool in the summer.

it may or may not depending how much insulation there is...i know for a fact that white shingles can save about 25% or more on electric bills in summer and thats with R45 in attic.

Thanks all for the replys, Greg what will it do to ruin the shingles?
DB cooling in the summer is not an issue. I know heat rises, but don't see how having a warmer attic in the winter won't help in some way (even if it is minimal) to add warmth to the rest of the building.
It is a shallow pitch, about 4-12 so painting it would be easy. With my spray rig I can do the whole surface in about an hour.
My concern was just not to ruin the shingles.

My thinking is they will get too hot and not be able to breath-the heat will be caught up in the shingle as well, not just the attic. If the paint sticks very long, the shingle would probably loose half of its useful life. I have seen some painted lighter colors-one to make a red, white and blue flag, and another to spell out a car dealerships name-all were done with the older 3 tab shingles. Just my theory. Greg
