OT Ice Fishing

Anyone out on the ice ? Doing any good . How much ice ? driving on it yet / Trying to get out this weekend here in iowa . Should be making good ice with this cold spell . Never have had truck out on it here . Up in N'Dakota no problem . Usually 48 -50 inches . They say 6-8 inches will hold a car,,,sure ain't gonna be MY car ! lol

A few houses out for two weeks, just saw a truck on the ice the last two days- central MN, west of metro. $15 grand fishhouse fell in a few weeks ago. Guy "checking" the edge of the ice in St. Cloud fell in yesterday where Sauk meets the MIssissippi. 15 minutes in fast current 4 feet deep almost did him in. I remember Army buds from the South who couldn"t believe driving a car on ice.

I have seen numerous ice houses out on Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs for a couple of weeks already. Have not seen any vehicles out there though! Greg

Been a bunch ice fishing around here the last couple weeks. Had a couple go thru the ice on a 4 wheel ATV day or so ago. Fortunately fisherman was able to rescue them with his ice auger. Unfortunately the ice fisherman had a heart attack and died helping the woman off the ice.

I don"t much care for going on the ice until others have tried it first! I don"t swim well in ice water.

I've heard there's 12" on West Okoboji. With all this snow on the ice I don't know it it'll get any thicker. Jim

my uncle was out last week here in NE iowa and caught alot of bluegills and some bass.

In Eastern Ontario the lakes froze over quickly during a cold snap, but then deep and spring-fed lakes like Otter and The Big Rideau have opened up in the middle. Nobody in his right mind would tour a lake at this point, though the odd crafty ice fisherman might run out a tested route to a shack with his Utility Vehicle.

Wait until February before thinking about taking a truck out in this climate.

16" + in central MN, trucks all over on the lake, a few walleyes and some perch are big enough to keep, sure takes a long time to clean a meal of perch!

I had crappies for supper this evening that my son & neighbor caught on a local lake. They went with a snowmobile but others are driving on with pickups & cars.
