hedge trimmer opinions

Hey folks, getting ready to buy a gas hedge trimmer. Had a cheap <100 buck weedeater brand for about 10 years that done OK/good but was a little light. Hedge is old and tuff. Leaning towards the Stihl HS45 but was wondering if anyone has had better luck with other brands. Liked the looks of an echo I saw at HD when I was home last May, but they weren't much different in price than the Stihl. Have a Stihl dealer 5 miles away, but I'd be buying from the States. Would use the local dealer for problems/service, but if (for example) Echo is better, they could work on it also.

The hedge is only about 60 ft long. Also thinking of talking the county guys that take care of cemeteries and a couple public places take it off about half it's heighth and then just get a lighter cordless model to keep it under control.

Any experience/advice is appreciated.

Check the arborist site to see what those people think or recommend . I picked up a like new Crapsman at a yard sale . New plug & carb kit & that puppy runs & cuts great . I don't care for Sears power tools , but the trimmer only cost me 10.00 at the sale & about 15.0 repairs , so I like that part . God bless

You cant go wrong with either. I have 2 Echo HC 1600s that I bought new in 1998, we use them every year on alot of pruning jobs, no problems. I also have a Shindaiwa, which is also good.

I have run a landscaping business for the last 8 years and after the first 2 years using Echo, you couldn't give me one. I have used Stihl mostly for the last 5 years but am more and more impressed by the RedMax/Shindawa hand tools. If you do buy the Stihl, don't go with the HS45. The blades are junk and will not hold an edge, it is a light duty home owner model. We bought 2 of them because they were much lighter but they did not last. I have bought 2 of the RedMax and use one personally. It is heavy but it is awesome. The oldest RedMax is 3 years old and the blades are as sharp as they were from day one, they really amaze me.Seems like my model is the TMZ CH 2401 or 2400. I have switched to RedMax for back pack blowers and hedge trimmers.

On that small of a hedge, most anything will work. I like the stihl FS weed eater, with the multiple attachments it takes. I use the hedge trimmer for hedges, of course, but it also makes quick work of trimmin under barbedwire fences on the farm, too.
