I ran out of light today while working on a ford 330 engine I have in a chipper. It was running real good when I parked it about 4 mo. ago. Now it starts ok, and runs good at about 1/2 throttle. When I open it up more, it back fires out the tali pipe. It has about 6 hours on avalve job. I will probably figure it out, but I thought I would run the problem by a few ford people. If the vacuum advance stopped working would that cause the problem I have? The cap looks good inside also. Thanks for any help Stan

No it doesn't smooth out, just keeps running crappy,at full throttle, and back firing, but back to 1/2 it runs good. Stan

Mechanical advance, springs or pivots may not be working. Clean and lube. All I can think of in a hurry. Points if you have them, condensor and retime. Lean mix. Bad or old gas. Maybe drop a can of drygas in. Cover all the bases. Is choke working? Should stay closed for quite a while. Easy stuff first.

I am thinking that from sitting for those four months, maybe you have some valves sticking a little.

Good advice from the others on what to check.

last week was working on a slant 6 Dodge on a JD 800 swather. It had been parked inside without being run for years. It would run fine at idle or fast idle, but acted like yours at 1/2 or more throttle. I knew the fuel system was OK as we swapped on the carb and fuel pump from the old engine this one replaces.
Thought it had to be ignition system. checked for free advance weights = OK. Checked the point dwell and point resistance = OK.

Replaced the condenser and it ran great. Old condenser apparently died of old age while parked.

could be a stopped up fuel filter or trash in carb...does it run any better with partial choke?
