Hello,
The most powerful diesel in the world is a 2 cycle engine. It is also the most efficient.
Here are some pictures.
Not made in the U.S.A.!

An instructor I had in diesel injection systems described a similar one on an oil rig in Saudi Arabia. All normal maintenance can be done while it's running, and it runs for years without ever stopping.

Impressive!

Thanks for the photos, Guido.

I've seen photos and read about these engines in the past. Available in 6 to 14 cylinder versions, these two stroke (Detroits forever) marine engines are made in Japan.

The design features a 38" bore and 98" stroke (111,143 CI/1820 L and 7780 HP per cylinder). The 14 cylinder turbocharged version produces 108,920 HP and 5,608,312 ft/lb of torque at 102 RPM. They are the most efficient prime movers built by man.

Wonder what they will do with a chip in them?

Dean

It is used on big tankers and container ships. Where I work, we take care of the governor for the engine. Governor weighs around 300lbs, with 200 ft.lb. of torque at the output shaft.

I've a bit more info as well as a few more photos of these engines in an email but do not know how to post it in the forum.

Dean

There was a show on Discovery about the Emma Maersk (largest container ship) with that engine. If one cylinder needs repair, they can take it apart and fix it without having to stop the engine. Incredible! I think they shut it off when loading and unloading. There's something like 6600 containers on those ships. Dave

Hello for those of you that are interested on the rest of the story.
Do a search on the most powerful diesel engine
in the world. All the info you want is in there.
Detroit Diesel 2 stroke/cycle thechnology is alive!
And more efficient then a 4 stroke/cycle engine!
Guido.

Hello Dean,
You think we can make this programmer work?
May have to come up with an adaptor?
Guido.

Would make a good irrigation pump engine or tractor pulling engine!!! Imagine it throwing a rod or spinning a bearing and you being the one to repair it Ouch!! (may be when i was younger)

I see at least two people here referred to it as a Detroit. Detroit is a 2 cycle diesel but this is not a Detroit. Sulzer?

Of course.

The Detroit reference is simply a reference to the Detroit (formetly Winton) two cycle technology.

Dean

Apparently, at least some of the engines are cranked by electric motors, much like smaller engines.

One can see a geared flywheel along with what appears to be a starter drive in one of the photos.

Dean

That gear is for the turning motor. for slow turning of engine for maintenance. Engine is started by air, introduced to the cylinders from n airstart manifold.
Jack

Hello TomH in PA,
The completed engine is the first 12 cylinder built. They are available up to 14 cylinder configuration, all inline. More efficient then my car engine! we should make one here in the states to beat it!
Guido

We have Colt-pielstick. They make some big engines. If an American company was going to go for it, it would be them.
Jack

Increasing scale helps improve the efficiency of all fluid devices. The boundary layers and and the leakages are proportionately less.

The part about the engine I can never figure out is how they are able to shut down individual cylinders for maintenance.

Must be some type of disconnect between the crank and the rod. I looked around but could never find enough info to explain why!

Hello CLTX,
BSFC(BRAKE SPECIFIC FUEL CONSIMPTION)IS:
0.278 lb. per Hr. Per H.p.
BSFC at max efficiency is 0.260 Lb./Hr/Hp.
Your car 0.40 lb/Hr/Hp. Take or leave a few drops!
Thermal efficiency is more then 50%.
14 cyl engine at ecomy setting will consume 1660 gallons of heavy fuel per hour.
Guido.

Fuel consumption is around 250 TONS per day.

That sounds about right, when I was in the Navy I estimated the cruiser I was on used about 100,000 gallons per day when we were at sea.

My F4 Phantom II with both burners lit burned 2 gals a second. That's 7200 gals in an hour.

I was one of those guys who launched those F-4's.
You are right,..they really burned up the JP-5.
What squadron were you in? We had VF111 and VF 51.
Leo
USS Coral Sea CVA-43

VF-92 CVA 64 VF-51 "Screaminf Eagles" Knew a lot of them. Tooter Teague, Blackjack Finley, Devil Houston.

Wow, that's a lot. And how much gal can you burn up usually?

Old Blackjack gave me a ride in the backseat of his F-4. Back then you could go to the paraloft and get a backseat License pretty qiuck. I got my one and only catapult shot and arresting gear landing from Blackjack. He gave me a pretty good ride over Cubie Point in the Phillipines. He wore a leather helment in the cockpit when he flew. Nice bunch of pilots all of them. Good memories.
