freeze plug installation ?

Ive got a 2" expantion plug seeping a little water on 860 ford. I think the plug itself may have a fracture or pinhole in it. Question, should I use loctite, gasket sealer, or nothing on the new plug when I put it in?

I'm puttering away on an old Petter diesel right now. I've drilled the frost plug holes and will taper pipe thread them. Then turn in a brass plug with a little pipe dope on the threads.
Lucky they have have a selection from 1/8" to 2" pipe taps at work.

I've always used Permatex aviation sealer. Brush it on the edges and drive it in. It does a good job filling in any rust pits in the opening. Wear disposable gloves or keep some WD-40 handy to 'wash up' with, its sticky and gooey.
Good luck, Billy

I don't understand...why would you do that instead of just putting in new plugs? How is a threaded plug going to protect it if it should ever happen to freeze??

Same question for the Loctite guy???

You guys do realize what a frost plug's job is, right?

Don't know how they came to be called "freeze plugs" as I have never seen one prevent a block from cracking when frozen.

They are properly called "core plugs" and are put in the block so the casting sand can be removed after the block is cast at the foundry.

If it's going to freeze, the so called frost plug provides little protection. All they are for is a place for the foundry to shake out casting sand.
Who is such a careless slob to not run antifreeze in an engine?
The polished brass plugs will look good with the other brass and copper on the antique engine.

I coat the new plugs with the old style hardening Permatex. Make sure the hole is clean before installing the new plugs.
