Having Trouble Connecting DVD/VCR to HDTV

I'm not having any luck connecting my DVD/VCR to my new HDTV. I connected it the way the TV owners manual said, but it will only play the DVD connected that way, and not the VCR. When I try to connect it the way the DVD/VCR manual says in order to get VCR function,I can't get any output through the TV...not on TV, not on VIDEO function, not on COMPONENT function. I don't have any HDMI connectors on the DVD/VCR unit, so I can't try to connect it that way.

The DVD/VCR unit is a Phillips DVP3340V17, and the TV is a Sylvania LC321SSX LCD screen HDTV.

Had anyone else ever encountered this problem...and if so, what did you do about it? I need an answer fast, because my wife wants to record a program on Tuesday night. And helpful answers will be greatly appreciated.

Antenna...I get sufficient channels over the air that I don't need to spend $20, $30, or $50 a month for cable or satellite.

Also, there's no F-style coax connector on the DVD/VCR...it only has RCA jacks. The TV still accepts my F-style antenna connection.

There is a button on the front of the VCR / DVD player ( could also be on the remote ) that lets you select wheather or not you want to use the DVD player or VCR function . There is usually a LED that shows you which function is selected , it is usually above or below the button or switch or on the machines display screen , if it has one. I have operated two that have this function and they all should have it. If the DVD part is working , then make sure that the function switch is moved over to the VCR function. If this dosen't fix your problem , then you may have to use a different hook up ( connection ) method such as S - Video or RCA cables or some other way of connection. The reason there is no tuner in the VCR / DVD player is because of the invention of S Video cables , etc., which is a much better hook up the coaxial cables . This way you also need to buy an external TV Tuner ( as it said in the instruction manual that I read on one ) to hook up the player the old fashioned way with coaxial cables so that the signal will go through the player.

I'm in the wrong house to look, but I got a DVR/VCR to do what you want to do - antennea also. It will record from the antennea to the DVR with some success.

I'm thinking you will have a tough time recording with what you have - unless you go through a converter box. So you can only record from one channel - no one there to change channels in between.

They don't like recording HD onto VHS; your unit doesn't have a tuner I'm guessing; thank Hollywood for threatening lawsuits against anyone who makes a real, working TV recording unit any more. All they allow is Tivo type stuff that is all internal & controlled. Japan has wonderful Bluray recorders that work great. Not allowed here.

Yeah...I just discovered this unit doesn't have a tuner. The kids gave it to us for Christmas 2008, and we just took it out of the box last month. Hooked it up as the TV instructions say, and only the DVD will play. We don't watch many VHS movies...obviously...but now we know we can't watch one show while recordng another with this unit.

And our old unit only has an analog tuner, so trying to fix it is out, too.

Your best bet is hooking up a converter box with either of the VHS units.

Turn the converter box on to the channel you want to record, be sure you have locked out the 'power down' feature most of them have that turns them off in 4 hours, and let it be.

Tell the analog VCR to record whatever channel the box outputs to (3 or 3) at the time the show will come on. Or hook the new tunerless VCR up to the outputs of the converter box & have it record that source at the right time.

You should be able to get both the DVD & VCR to work with the TV you have. I'm a hands on person, can't describe what to try in text. But - it should work. Like the other person said, if the DVD is working, you should just hit a button to switch the unit to the other 1/2, so the VCR is the active unit?

I've run into some of those that don't really allow 2 way connections for playing and recording. Especially with no antenna input or tuner. Seems like I bought one of those 40 dollar specials from walmart a couple christmas's ago. Similar problem but the slide on the dvd quit working and ended up in the trash.

The player might have a set of rca inputs to the vcr either on the front or the back. Then your tv needs a rca output to plug into so you can record. Hard to get a tv with an output now though.

And then some vcr's aren't in stereo so you have to use a Y connector to get any sound.

Now they are made to feed satelite and cable boxes into them and out to the tv.

Probably didn't help you here but good luck.

I had to buy new DVD/VCR combo in "Digital" mode. The analog one will not get a signal even with a converter because you need two converters. One to convert to digital and the other to reconvert back to analog for the dvd/vcr. It a real mess. I wish the H3!! they would have just left it alone. I was getting all the channels and now only get about half and even them 'block out' at the slightest weather problem. Another money maker for someone.

Do you have a button on the TV remote that says INPUT.

You may have to change the input choice to accept the input from the VCR.

On the DVD/VCR we have, we have to change the input channel on the TV for the VCR to work.

In another words the DVD comes in on one input channel and the VCR comes in on a different channel and the Dish or antenna is on still another input channel.

Here's how my DVD & VCR are connected. I'm using Verizon's FIOS, but it was connected the same way when I had Comcast.

Cable in on the Set top box (converter) then out from converter to VCR & from VCR to TV. To record a program set the TV on Channel 3.

For the DVD, Set TV on Channel 4 connect DVD cables to VCR. To view a DVD set VCR on Video I.

If your DVD/VCR has no coax connections, it may be a "Player" only. If so, no record functions. If you cannot get any tape playback, note that there is a button on the DVD/VCR unit (or remote) that allows you to select which info is fed to the TV, either "Disk" or "Tape".

I hooked up a DVD recorder/VCR combo yesterday. Our old DVD player wasn't playing all disks and my wife wanted one so she could copy home made VHS tapes onto DVDs. Mine hooked up with an optional flat ended cord, no headache this time, I know what it is like when it doesn't work. Every system is different, read you dvd manual closely, there must be several ways. Simply put, from the "out" of your DVD to the "input" of your TV. Your TV must be set for the right source too, easily done with your remote. We have a "dish" system so we did not hook the antena threw it.
And for those of you who are complaining about this not being farm related, what do you think some farmers do when it is below zero out? Some of us like to relax in the easy chair and watch a good movie.

Our TV has an "INPUT" button. The choices are TV, VIDEO, COMPONENT, HDMI1, HDMI2, and HDMI3.

Since nothing is connected with HDMI cables, I don't use them. On TV, the tv plays normally. When connected as the tv's owners manual shows, nothing plays on VIDEO...and on COMPONENT, only the DVD player works. Connected the way the TV owners manual shows, the DVD/VCR owners manual says "These connections support only DVD playback." So by doing what the TV's owners manual shows, the DVD/VCR unit is apparently doing what it's supposed to.

But when I connect the way the DVD/VCR's owners manual says to connect for DVD and VCR operation, NOTHING plays back on ANY "input" setting, except the TV itself in TV setting.

You must be one dull person if all you want to talk about is tractors. Of course, I spelled out the subject of the thread in the "subject" line of the post; STILL, you had to jump in and tell us the post isn't farm-related. [Or, as my kids would state it: "Well, DUH!!"]

DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE WORDS IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE POST? Most folks found them self-explanatory. Perhaps you need to concentrate a bit more on comprehension of what you read. Plenty of folks "down on the farm" are new to HDTV's--as are MOST Americans--and there have previously been SEVERAL previous posts on the topic. Yet you chose NOT to weigh in on ANY of them. So why is MY post subject to your scorn, and not theirs?

If it's because you have some sort of beef with ME, then let's get that out in the open right here and now...rather than hiding in the closet, as you apparently are now. Yeah, you're not "Funny ha-ha," so you must be "Funny queer."

Here's the rub with that: I don't have any sort of "set-top box," because I'm not on satellite dish OR cable. But thanks for your input.

Been there, done that. Also played with every INPUT setting on the TV...to no avail. Might be something defective in the VCR output circuit, for all I know.

Thanks for the input.

See my replies below about the various INPUT settings on the TV...none of which showed anything while the VCR tape was running.

I'm thinking that might be my problem...trying to use an IH Fast Hitch with a 3-point implement...or vise-versa. As they always said in the automotive world, maybe I need a different A-dapter kit.

I had the same problem a couple of months ago. I spent several days trying to figure it out. I kept trying to get the VCR to work with the component cable.. Finally, in the back of the book, it said that component would not work with VHS. So I just hooked up the audio and video input cables, set the player to VCR and started playing a VHS tape. Then I went to INPUT (Source on my remote) and scrolled through all the choices and ....bingo. Felt stupid. If the grandkids had been around, they could have solved it in a couple of seconds. Buzzman72 describes the set-up pretty good.

You need to set TV to 'Video' and you need the (yellow [video], red & white [audio]) cords between VCR and TV. That is because the component video (Green, Red, Blue) will not function with the tape side.

You would then connect your antenna to cable IN on the VCR, then out of the VCR to your TV. You probably need to set your VCR on channel 3 and press menu and set your local time, then scan in your channels, you probably need to select how you're receiving the TV stations and then select Antenna. To record a channel you would click on Menu and select the channel you want to record, the time it starts & stops. Then shutoff the VCR. Hal

I have to agree with HAY. The only way I could get VCR and DVD to work was to buy a new combination set. Now everything works fine on digital

There is an adapter cable available for the RCA plugs output on VHS players to TVs with only HDMI inputs. I have not used one nor bought anything from this seller.
