Potato digger

I'm looking to build a potato digger this year instead of having to go through and digging them all by hand. Anybody have any plans/photos/advice.

I'm in the process of gathering part to make one myself. I found a manufacturer of a 3pt pto model I like but not at $3500.00 for a new one. Willsie is the manufacturer they are on the web look them up. I just puck up an old slip scoop and I figure I can buy the shaker chain and other components from them. I have a right angle gear box, so I have the basic parts, Just need to find time between now and fall to put it together.

As a kid, we only had to plant potatoes every 3 years or so. After the 1st planting, Dad would run the plow down the rows. We got more potatoes than us and the neighbors could eat and had almost a full crop of volunteers the next year and so on til they were too thin.

These are pretty common here and can be had free to cheap. Shipping would be expensive though

BBT, I built a gadget to help with potato digging. It has no moving parts, so it's not really a digger. It resembles a three point hitch middle buster, I guess. It has rods extending off of the back side of it. I thought the rods would kinda vibrate and filter the dirt through, leaving the taters on top. I made the rods out of 7/8" material - they're too heavy and don't vibrate like I hoped they would. I use it, even though it doesn't work like I planned. It busts up the ground and makes the taters easier to gather.

One of these days I'll learn to post a picture.

Just get you an old lister plow, that's what my Dad used for as long as I can remember. Worked just fine, or maybe it was just because I didn't know any better.

Don't know where you live, but I have a potato plow, pull with a tractor, you walk behind plow to hold upright, has rods to let soil drop thru. Little ingenuity, could adapt for 3 pt. I live in Wapello, Ia. Price of $100. email [email protected] or call 319-759-6533 if interested.

Hey BBT,

I wish someone would invent something like a potato digger that you could use to plow a gravel drive with. It would seperate the dirt that collects between white rock from the white rock leaving the rock on top.
