I honed the cylider which removed the grooves in the damaged cylinder. I was surprised how little effort it took. This will be a chore/ offroad fun farm truck.Gotta check ring gap tommorrow to make sure we are still in spec. I used the type of hone with three stones, as opposed to the ball type. How do you make the 45 degree cross hatch patern they suggest? Mine looks ok but not not like Ive seen come from a machine shop.

The 45 degree cross hatch takes practice. It is done with the right speed on the hone and the right up and down. As long as there is an angle 30-60 degrees that will be good enough to get the rings to seat. Use a hot soapy water mix and a good rag to clean all the honing grit out of the bore. Can't be too clean. If you leave any grit in the bore, it will end up in the oil and chew up the crank and bearings. Don't be afraid to ask questions now rather than put it together and have problems later.

just in case youre not aware...use cast iron rings in that cylinder...chrome rings are nearly impossible to seat on anything less than a fresh bore

Probably the one you've seen from the machine shop were honed with a machine built just for honing.
