Hi Speed Tractor

I was wondering if anyone knows of a tractor in the 50 to 80HP range that will travel on road 25mph and up. Am looking for a cab tractor to push snow with that has high road speed to travel between jobs. Thanks

A conventional farm tractor would not be safe or controllable at those speeds because there is NO suspension and the tractor would start bouncing and lose contact with the road.

Joe,

All IH and the later JD tractor have a fairly high road gear. Don't know about 25, but fer sure in the low 20's anyway.

I do not know much about them at all but the European made tractors are capable of high speed 30mph plus. I also believe that they have suspension on the front. I know this does not help in your search though.

When I was stationed in Iceland they MF tractor that would run close to 30 mph down the road. I followed a many of them. They seemed to control them very well, so I am not going to say it was unsafe, just a little faster than I would want to drive one.

Bigger than you want but I rented a TW Ford(I don t remember the rest of the modle #) about 125hp, I hooked on a house trailer, 14X70, and the flag car said I was running 30 mph.

We had a IH 1066--1974 model- that would do 24 or 25. and handled good on the road for Ag. style tires.

If capable of 25+ MPH in North America. The machine must have a license plate etc.No SMV sign.
In Europe up to 38mph is allowed with unsprung axles.

I have a 280hp John Deere MFWD Tractor that does 26 and handles perfect on the road. It doesnt bounce nor is it hard to keep on the road.

That may be true somewhere but not in the "I" states. Never seen of a license plate on a farm tractor. Alot of the newer Deere tractors will make 25+mph. Our 7520 will go 26. Sure is nice but hard to find a smooth enough road to take advantage of it.

LEHR 1947 Big Boy ,6 cylinder Chrysler engine,5 speed truck transmission, two ton truck rear end and 15.5 X 38" tires, will run 50 plus if you have the nerve.Sorry no cab.Yes it's factory made in 46,47,48 by Custom Tractor also made a Wards,Rochol and a Simpson.

Law requires tractors traveling over 25 require licensing and legal lighting. Just because a tractor can exceed 25 does not mean it is legal. My suburban will do over 100 MPH but does not mean it legal to do so.

Fact is though, I have yet to hear of any tractor driver be pulled over for speeding.

I can't remember the name but there is one new model that travels at 45 mph and Ohio has made special laws for them.

Some 574 Internationals were row crops, some utility. A few had the faster utility gears with row crop wheel & tires and WILL scoot. More than once, my pick-up was tied up and I'd take that 574 home for lunch.

Our Massey 285 goes somewhere in that range, and so does our Oliver 1855 w/ 18.4-38's. Both were available with a cab.

Well Maybe I should ask if there are small tractors with independent suspension like the fendt but in 80 or so HP. We have all the big stuff for pushing snow. 3 9520's with 16 ft foldable blades on front but we use small ones for corners and hard to get place's in big parking lots and hospitals. We have a 5520 JD but it only go's around 18 and everyone is allways waiting on it.

I think the JCB Fastrac's can do about 45 or 50 mph. Of course there's the MM UDLX that will go about 40 mph but one of those might cost a little bit more than you had in mind. Lots of tractors will be in the 20 to 22 mph range. Dave

Didn't say the tractor has plates.Just saying according to the law a slow moving vehicle sign applies only to farm and industrial equipment etc. traveling at less than 25mph. Above 25mph a whole new set of rules apply.
Why do you think new tractors released in North America from the factory don't exceed 25mph?

Don't know where you live but in Canada you could be busted. A 26mph tractor would require plates, parking brakes, turn signals, brake lights, high/low beam head lights, insurance etc.
Same goes for an old straight truck with a gravity grain bin on the back. Under 25mph a SMV sign is fine for a farm or construction vehicle.
Over 25mph all laws have to be followed as any highway vehicle.

A modified Chamberlain tractor used to follow cars competing in a round Australia rally in the late 1950s. The standard Chamberlain had a front suspension and the gearing was changed to allow 60 MPH.

It was driven around Australia several times

Chamberlain was sold to John Deere in late 1970s (I think), then closed in 1980s

Quick answer:

Deere 6000 series with 24x24 and suspended front axle

25 MPH, LH shuttle. 6420 6320 etc.

25MPH is the SMV threshold just about everywhere in North America.

I guess I misunderstood the plate thing but Deere sells lots of tractors here that will go over 25. At least here in Illinois the smv is only for implements of husbandry not construction/industrial equipment.
