OT: CHICK ORDERS

Anybody in NY order chicks yet? Or goten any yet this year? Last spring I never got mine until April 7th. They said there was a big demand for chickens. I wanna get them sooner this year. So I thought Id see if anyone has gotten any yet. I still have 25 layers, but one coop is empty so I thought about getting 15 or so.

I order a couple of thousand over the course of a typical year and they can get hard to come by in the spring. I mostly use Ideal, but sometimes I have to shop around to find chicks.

Ordering chicks around doesn"t seem to work well. You gotta chase them. After you catch one, you"re supposed to be out of the market.

This time of year they are all very busy keeping up with demand. Remember, it's the time of year that all the feed stores including TSC are buying them so the demand is quit high.
I buy mine from Ideal and signed up for their online newsletter. Whenever they put the layers on sale (which isn't this time of year) I buy some. Usually get them for 50% to 75% off that way, and the shipping cost is still the same. Bought 35 Barred Rocks about 5 weeks ago for 99 cents each.

If you are going to mess with caring for some why not get 100 or so and butcher them in a few weeks?

I tend to recall that our family got 200 each year for that purpose.

Mom could make better fried chicken than about anyone.

I hadn't paid too much attention to chick prices for several years- was shocked when the flyer came out from the local farm store. $1.50 apiece for straight run! Considering you can get processed fryers for about 3 bucks on sale at the supermarket, I can't see much future in raising them when you start out paying half for the baby chick.

I dont want them for meat, I want hens for eggs, I sell the eggs and eat them myself. I get $2.50 a dozen for them and people seem to love the free range eggs. Come winter when the hens slow down production, because I dont keep lights on them, People still stop in asking for eggs. Funny how they have no clue about raising anything. The supermarket has eggs all the time. Thats all they know. LOL J

Thanks for posting the link for the website. It's been a LONG time since I've raised chickens. Wife said if I get acreage for a garden and calves that she wanted me to raise her some chickens. I'm about six months away from re-joining civilian employment after 25 years in the military. It's going to be a rough road.
