Hello, I"ve seen this topic come up from time to time, but I"ve never seen anyone suggest where to buy ones own tank. I am looking to do just that after my last fill up back in the fall, my local(so. Indiana)gas co. charged me $2.79/gal, and after talking to a few locals around town that are gitting it from different places from $1.79 to $1.99 I feel it is time to make a move.(a little late actually) I know the price isn"t coming down, but I believe I can do better in the short term by buying my own tank. Now, does anyone in the So. Indiana or No. Kentucky area have a place in mind?
Thanks in advance!

I live in SE IN and have owned my own tank for over 15 years.

Nearly all of the propane suppliers will sell you a tank. I bought mine from Level Propane (now part of Amerigas) when they were expanding in my area.

Regardless of where you buy your tank, be sure to get a copy of the sales contract and keep it in a safe place. Propane suppliers will not sell fuel to you unless you lease a tank from them or can prove that you own yours.

Good Idea - I found I was able to pay for the tank with the savings in only 2 - 3 years.

Check with all the propane dealers in the area, they all sell tanks. You'll probably have to have them fill it the first time. When I did that their 'first fill' price was lower than anybody elses best deal. So it was all good.

I have had good luck buying my propane on pre-buy contracts (in the summer) from Thrifty Propane, check their website. They are based in Ohio but I am pretty sure they do sell in Indiana too. Their service has been good, when we run low on gas I just call them and they deliver in a day or two.

I live in Bloomington, South Central Indiana, and owning your own tank is the only way to go. Each year I can price shop for the absolute best price. I have bought from Shelby County Co Op, Amrigas, Ferrellgas etc. I usually also pay a deposit to lock in the winter fill price. It was around 1.59 to 1.69 this year for the summer fill up in July.

Mac;

Check Ohio Craigslist, Cincinatti area. There is a company there selling new or refurbished tanks. Ad says Oh/Ky/Ind. Just type "propane tank" in search box.... Gene

We had a local company claim they owned the tank, Grandma showed them the receipt from 60 years ago.
