driving without radiator or generator

I want to back my A Farmall out of the shop and sandblast it. It has a distributor and point system with a cutout.

QUESTION: Can I run it without a generator and not damage the electrical system? It will run for less than 2 minutes. I will tape the wire ends so they don't short out.

Thanks for your advice.

Without a radiator, not real long, but without a genny a longgggggggggggg time until the battery can no longer power the coil.

Yup...I've done it many times.

Just run the engine slow and keep the run time to a minimum - certainly no more than a couple minutes.

Running without a radiator is more of an issue than running without a generator - think overheating of engine vs. no charge of battery.

With that said as long as it is for a short period of time ( no more than a couple of minutes), no problem.

The worst you hurt without a gen is the battery - and only if you run it long enough to draw it down more than 40% or so which is what automotive type batteries are designed for. No worries on the electrical issue. You can run all day & not bother anything.

I'd be worried with no water at all - a hot spot could develop pretty quick. You'll probably be ok, but - keep it slow & shut it down quick. I'd push/pull it if I could.

Genny no problem at all and you can run one that way for days/weeks/months if you have a fan belt on the water pump/fan. The radiator on the other hand max of 5 minute run time and that is pushing it if the temps are over 70 out. I start and run a lot of tractor with no coolant in the systems but they are also ones that had been locked up and I want to get them a bit on the warm side so things like rings pop loose. Ops told another trade secret on that one LOL

You will do more damage with that sand blaster than running for 2 minutes. You can try and tape all you want...but that grit may still get in places you do not want it to.

I"d add that it might be good to change the oil first, so you have good oil circulating. That might help avoid some hot spots.

There is NO WAY I WOULD EVER SAND BLAST A TRACTOR as YOU CAN NEVER GET ALL THE SAND CLEANED OUT OF IT. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT doing that!!!!!!!!! Armand

I agree. The sandblasting will do more damage than running the engine dry for a couple of minutes.

Six months later you will still be finding sand where you didn't think it could possibly be.

Driving it for a couple minutes, fine

Sandblasting before painting - GREAT. I wouldn"t do it any other way. As far as the sand ruining the tractor, be smart about where you tape it up and blow it off with clean air real good before removing any tape and you will be fine. I have done dozens of tractors that way.

N8terry: I had my utility tractor with loader and backhoe sandblasted maybe 30 years ago. I'll never even consider it again on something like that.. No way. All the hard to reach spots and all the places with heavy oil film or grease were A total waste of time and $$. Anything but sand blasting... ag

Put the tow strap on and pull it out. Why take chances. As for the sandblasting , I have had good luck with these ground up corncobs. Nowhere near as abrasive as sand. Takes paint off no problem.

Thats what i do i use some pvc pipe hooked to the water connections. I also remove the gas tank so i can do a better job and use rubber hose to the carb gas is in a 2in piece of pcv cap one end and you will have enough gas and the water will let you run the engine enough to do the sand blasting. good luck hop ya gots all the leaks fixed as you know new paint seems to make new leaks ya shoulda fixed first.

I havent had any problems been doing it for 20 pluss yrs havent had any problems just gots to know how to tape and so forth.
