O/T not a serious horse buyer?

We were contacted by a mom looking for a horse for her daughter, and they drove 3 hours this morning to check the gelding out. They didn't bring a trailer with them.
If a potential buyer of one of your tractors showed up from 3 hours away in a car, would your disappointment start showing through?
The one positive is that they're staying all day to experience as much as they can with him. It sure would be nice to get rid of one of these hay burners...

I never show up to buy a tractor with a trailer behind my truck. Makes me look to eager to the buyer.

Done it many times with tractors. Not with horses though as I had pretty made up my mind before I started out because of good clear photos and copies of vet papers. The horse people I have dealt with have not disappointed me in their descriptions.
Buying a tractor from a privet party seems to be more of a gamble. original paint with brush marks and wrong color. Like new tin with rust holes. 80% rear tires with a bulge in the side wall parked so it is hard to see. Fresh overhaul with old paint on the head gasket side wall. Must I go on?
Also one might not own a trailer and want to see what they are buying before paying someone with both horses or tractors.

Also if you have something to sell you would be naive to think every person that looked was a (serious) buyer. Didja ever make the rounds of car lots of appliance stores and buy th efirst thing you came across??

I never ever take a trailer with me. Don't want the seller to say "o man he has a trailer that I bet he doesn't want to haul home empty".

I've driven long distances with a trailer and then dropped it at a truck stop chained to a light pole before going to somebodies place to look at their item.

Driving 3 hours one way is a serious buyer, in my opinion.
I hadn't thought about them possibly not having a stock trailer though. Good point.

we never bring the trailer the first time to look at a "cold" horse , one we have never seen before, too many scammers out there posting a picture in a add for a good roping horse, and when we look at the horse that is actually for sale its a completly different horse from its picture, or upon examination the "3 year old mare" turns out to be 20 ,best to make the deal then arrange to pick up the horse or have it transported, we will bring a trailer if we have seen the horse work at a rodeo or roping event and talked with its owner previously and kind of know what we're buying in advance

I hope for your sake they are not like the people that were "seriously" interested in my 56 Chevy.

After 1 hour of his wife taking pictures of him sitting in the car from a 100 different angles I told them that was enough. If they were interested they could come back another time. They didn"t want to drive it or even start it.

I think he was just some dipsheet that was reliving his high school dream without having to spend any $$$.

But I have had a lot of good people show up and spend a fair amount of time looking at my tractors and cars, then purchasing.

Sometimes it is hard to read whether a person is serious or not.

Good luck,
Rick

As others say, showing up with a trailer means an extra 10% or more to the seller, right? I'd not want to look that eager to buy....

If someone showed up at our place with a trailer the 1st visit, I'd send them packing. I don't deal with horse traders either direction.

I've sold tractors on a small scale for 30 years and very few serious buyers bring a trailer.I have had some bring a trailer, but explain to me they might go home empty when we meet.

I've driven 3 hours and more a lot of times to look at a tractor and I always take my car the first time. When its time to negotiate delivery is one of my talking points after we have worked on price. More than once I have been offered another thousand off if I'll pick up. When someone shows up here with a trailer to buy something first trip, the price is what its advertised.

I stopped at a watermelon stand in Missouri. As I was getting out of the car, I popped the trunk lid. I started to jokingly haggle on the price of a melon, and the lady said, "You already popped your lid - I know you're leaving with a melon - the price is firm."
