Versatile D145

I'm looking at buying a versatile D145 with bad liner seals (coolant in the oil). Where could I get liners, seals, pistons, and bearings for someting like this? The engine is a V8 cummins. What would be a fair offer to make on this tractor? What would it be worth when it is running?

What engine is it... if the original V8-470, they were VERY prone to the cam bushings turning in the block. It was possible to send the blocks away to get the bores line-bored to a larger size, or MANY were simply changed out for the V8-504,which already had the thicker shell cam bearings.

Some were swapped out for Cummins "C" Series in-line 6's, but the V-8 turned 3000 RPM's and your ground speeds get messed up with a 2100 to 2500 RPM engine.

At one time (early 70's) the VAL and VALE engines were a CHEAP engine to OH, now the parts are ASTRONOMICAL.

Back in the day, aftermarket companies like Sealed Power make liner kits and bearings, though it seemed the Cummins liner kits were better, and competitively priced (at that time).

Last I checked Cummins could still supply anything needed (at a price) and I don't know what the aftermarket has, but it wouldn't be too tough to find out.

Around here, you be lucky to get $2500 for a good running tractor, and you'll quickly spend that getting your proposed money pit in running order.

And it will be a NOISY and uncomfortable "ride" (by today's standards) with a poor hydraulic system.

Oh, yeah, did I mention I still have one of the gems, as sort of a "pet".

I think a D145 with bad engine around here wouldnt even bring a 1000, unless the tires were real good. My uncle and also a neighbor have a 145's they still use for dozer work and both have 555 v8's in them. There also use to be one in the area that had an 855 put in it, but the frame was lengthend to make it work. I can't help you with the overhaul of the v8, but would suggest finding one out of the salvage yard. They usually come with a one month warranty, if its going to fly apart it will usually do it right away. Once the radiator is out of the way there isnt much holding the engines in. I was at a sale a few years back and the guy had six of them, big machines for there time.

I bought this one for $1000 not too long ago, so I wouldn't pour much money into a "fixer-upper"...

It has a three point, almost new Cummins engine and good tires.
