battery light on

Can any of you fine people tell me if I'm doing any damage to my tractor? I have a 3cyl diesel battery lights been on for sometime now. Haven't had time to check it out,has new battery, starts everytime no problem. This won't hurt anything until I get time will it? Thanks for your advice Mike

I would use a volt meter to see what the charging voltage is across the battery terminals
with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better. Should be around 14.5 volts on a 12 volt system. Hal

your slowly running down your battery. this will eventually damage the battery as they dont like to be left in a discharged state.

Usually you can pull the cover off the voltage regulator and clean the contacts with a wooden emory board and fix it. but use a wooden board, not a metal file!!.

(quoted from post at 09:47:42 04/13/10) WHAT is the Brand and Model of your tractor?

know the tractor is a 2000, 3 cyl, diesel, but is the alternator a Lucas, Motorola, Delco, whatever? Is the light max brightness as when key on/engine stopped or just a dim glow when running? Frankly, if battery is staying charged, that is really all that matters (inch of black tape?).

The battery is only discharged during starting (glow plug use, cranking etc) after that unless your powering lights or something your ok.

Overtime, you will eventually deplete the battery and potentially you are taking life (longevity)out of the battery in doing so.

I have a 801 diesel ford that has a shorted out generator, so no charge (I have mine disconnected). I use the tractor and when I'm done I put it on a timed trickle charge to keep my battery topped off. This isn't a solution, just something to get me by until I, like you can make the proper repair.

On my Caseih the battery light has been on real dim for over two years now. I start and use the tractor about 2o% with lights on and have never had the battery get low yet. So obviously the alt is charging and the light is coming on for no reason.

I just repaired a Ford 3000 gas burner that was not charging. The Generator light was on. The problem was a mass of burnt wires under the regulator and a fried generator. This was a Lucas, Princess of Darkness, electrical system. I assumed the generator was bad because the "D" terminal, what on a US made generator would be the "A" terminal showed heat damage. I took it all to a Starter/Generator/Alternator shop. They said the armature was fried. They set me up with a new generator with the tach drive and a new regulator. I put it all on and rewired the mass of burnt wire at the regulator and the little light went out when the tractor was starter and to just confirm the battery was charging I checked the battery voltage with a digital voltmeter which showed a voltage of about 13.8 volts.

the lucas vr is bad about this... check the contacts first.

second take a hammer and tap on the back of the gen to knock the brushes loose,,

if that doent work, thirdly short from the heavy battery contact on the gen to the smaller field contact to make it go to full charge. if it does, the vr is bad... if not the gen is bad.
