mowing rates?

Have overgrowing field with weeds and a few small trees. About how many acres could I mow in an hour with 35 hp tractor and 5 foot mower?

Not really enough information to be of much help.

Coverage will depend upon density of cover, obstacles, terrain and shape of parcel.

Heavy grass mows MUCH harder than tall weeds and small saplings but saplings are a serious puncture hazard.

Last farmed about 5 years ago. Fescue border, grass in field not too thick. Flat rectangle.
saplings to about 1.5 in. Most smaller and not many of them

Divide the width of your machine by 8.25 and multiply that by the miles per hour you are going to travel this gives you the acres per hour not alowing for stopping or turning.
5/8.25 =.6x2mph?=1.2a/hr into 35a=29+hrs

The 8.25 comes from dividing the sq.ft in an acre by the ft in a mile if your machine covered 8.25 ft it would cover an acre for every mile you drove.Ag Engineering 1962 one thing I still use today.

By the time you lap and turn i'd guess close to an acre an hour unless you are in a really big field with nice long runs and then you will be amazed at how long it takes.

Old farmer's rule of thumb; width in feet covered (4.5 ???) times mph (3 ???) divided by 10 equals acres per hour......with a generous allowance for pit stops, etc. With the above figures, one and a third acres per hour.

I remember timing myself with a good running 9N Ford and a six foot mower with sharp blades and I came up with 1.68 acres per hour. My speed increased by hanging the front of the mower on chains so that it didn't drag on the ground...made it easier on the tractor. I might have even pumped up the tires a bit, that might make a difference in the big picture. ohfred

Charge by the hour. You didn't give enough info. Is the grass and weeds 6" tall or 2' tall? You might have to go over it twice or take smaller cuts. Dave

make sure the mower has a slip clutch or those saplings will make two pieces out of shear pins, 1 acre per hour with depending on the seat or how tough your derriere is

Friend of mine named Dane charges a dollar a minute for all grass cutting. He uses zero turn mowers only. Takes no breaks or coffee. Just zips through it. Dave
