What rod would be good to weld hardened steel to cold rolled iron. I need to repair my mower drive shaft coupling. I had to remove a bad section of drive shaft tube. Thanks stan

I'm agreeing with 135 fan, you can get real, real technical with welding or as I have found in the past on the farm, go with a stick welder and 7018 and 9 times out of 10 you will be good. As always, clean real good and use the right heat.

I found welding old disc blades that the weld would crack out as it cooled. I called a welding instructor who hunts on my land and he said preheat to dull red, weld with 7018. It worked.

I didn't think there was too much in the way of drivelines that was hardened... I'd suspect if you can't mark it... it's probably just case hardened.
If it's just cold roll, then a 7018 should be fine. If it's case hardened... you're going to weaken it anyway.
I'd just go with a 7018 and see what happens...

Like somebody said heat it red hot and weld it with 7018 or MIG.

To take hardness out of hardened steel you heat it red hot.Let it cool slow.It wont be hard where you heated it any more.7018 is about the best for welding things like that.MIG will work. There are other ways too.
