That's not good

Today I was mowing with my MF The motor started to sound a little rough, I made one more round, then it sounded real bad. Oil and smoke was being pushed out the breather tube. I got it back on the trailer, and headed for home. I pulled the head this afternoon. The head gasket blew out between cylinders. The tractor has never over heated, and always runs cool. Now I wonder whay this happened.Stan

Maybe because when something doesn't sound right, you go an extra round instead of stopping and checking out the problem? Dave

Let us know what you find whether it is a tired gasket, warped or cracked head or block. Is the water pump and thermostat working OK? Maybe there are better gaskets available now to fix the problem. Is it the original gasket?

Take a close look at the block. I have seen the area between the cylinders burn down when ran to long in that condition. However in my case, near as I could figure it was a heat related issue. Not that it ran hot, never did, just had a hot spot in a head that happened to be in the right place. Most like some crap in the passage. Don"t know the condition of your paint but a discolored or peeling paint spot can be an indication of head trouble.

I've seen several do this, especially with the copper laminate gasket. Surfacing the top of the block is an expensive option but I have fixed several of them by flattening a single strand of copper wire and laying it between the cylinders under the head gasket. Be sure the cooling system is good and thermostat working. After 50 hours or so, pull the top down and re-torque the head. Use a good graphite based anti-sieze on the bolt threads and under the heads to get a good smooth torque.

when it started running rough the gasket was already gone running one more round wouldn"t matter unless it got very hot, same fix either way.

I thought the same thing. Nothing like a little needless criticism of a guy who needs and has asked for help to make the world a better place.
