Parts Shipping Rant

I wanted to order a new starter switch. Found one on-line for $10.45. At checkout, shipping added $16.95. Haven't they heard the USPS ad: "If it fits, it ships." Smallest boxes are $4.95. How much can a switch weigh? How long can it take to put it in a box with a bit of newspaper? Or even put it in a small manilla envelope and mail it first class? I shipped a pint of plum sauce from Michigan to Oklahoma for $10.00 UPS. It's rediculous that the freight is more than the part. Someone lost a sale and a potential repeat customer. I'll buy one locally.

I just got a UPS shipping quote of $15 to ship a single blister pack of two 18V Dewalt flashlight bulbs that weighs less than an ounce and occupies less than one cubic inch.

I always ship parts via Postal Service and have been happy with them except that it can be very slow on occasions. UPS is way too expensive for me.

Same here, wanted to buy a radiater cap for a farmall B. $13.95 + $9.00 shipping. I found one somewhere else for alot less. Oh well they have the parts when I need them too, I guess we can take the good with the bad.

Tell me about it. Did you see my post the other day when I said I ordered a distributor cap and rotor from the dealer and the shipping was $22.53? Brought the cost of a cap and rotor to over $78.

I buy a fair amount of parts and finally smartened up. If shipping seems unreasonable, I e-mail or call the sender. Always ask if they can do better on the shipping. I find that more than one half the time the shipping is negotiable to a point.

Shipping and handling costs are major profit centers for most mail order places. They can easily double their profit by jacking up the shipping on small orders. I paid $20 to ship two motorcycle tires from Denver to the left coast. They sent the wrong ones so I got a DHL return voucher. I asked the guy at DHL what they charged to send them back, $8.

If you use Google shopping, you can filter to only include free shipping and see what that costs. I hate to go thru the whole order deal only to find the shipping is about equal to the item I want.

I had to get next day air shipping on some small parts. Tiny box weighed a few ounces.. $50.55 was what they crarged just for shipping!!! What a rip-off.

I have to join this rant. I don't appreciate it when I call a company to order parts and they tell me they ONLY ship UPS "because they pick up". Well, DUH, my post office mail carrier picks up every day here at my company, and so I use them 99.9% of the time. Also, with Flat Rate Priority, I can offer my customers the best rates on shipping that I have found. With careful planning and patience, I avoid those Overnight and Next Day rates. Note: I have had no complaints with Priority delivery times from any of my customers. PJ

Yesterdays Tractor is no better. Order electronic ignition for oliver 1650 freight they charged me over 17 dollars to ship does not weigh more then a couple pounds

(quoted from post at 14:50:30 06/06/10) Shipping and handling costs are major profit centers for most mail order places. .

I ordered something once with 16 buck shipping. Needed it and couldn't get them to flex on the shipping. Got the part and the postage sticker was $1.95.
Another aggravation for me is business's that won't ship USPS because I have a PO box address and can't receive UPS.

Why would you ask UPS to ship something that small? Probably 2 dollars or less usps. Just stick it in your mailbox and its on its way.

I suspect that UPS and FedEx offer shippers attractive contract prices if they will agree to do all shipping with the carrier. Notice that the labels now do not show the shipping cost nor in some cases the shipping date. The shipper may well be making big markups and profits on the shipping costs charged to customers.

Anytime you ship something overnite you're going to paya considerably higher price. You're paying a premium for the overnite service rather than for UPS to just put your item into their trucking system and let it work it's way to its destination.

It's kind of a supply and demand thing. You need something badly enough to have it overnited, then you pay extra for that service.

USPS may be cheaper but UPS is more reliable for me at least.

A big aggrivation I've run into is a nationwide industrial supplier that has 2 local stores. On occasions when they have something in stock they STILL add shipping! I've started just ordering online; a good percentage of the time the local store don't have what I need so It ends up being cheaper delivered to my door than paying shipping & often having to make 2 trips over there (one to order; one to pick up).
