Wheat with an A-C AllCrop 40

Wheat harvest seems to be coming a little earlier than usual in the Shanandoah Valley of VA this year. It looks like I'll be getting started some time this week. Due to my day job, I won't begin cutting until 5:30 or so each day, and will probably quit around 7:30 or whenever the straw gets tough. Needless to say, it will take some time to cut 7 acres this way with a 40 inch header, so I don't expect to finish up until next weekend. If anyone is interested in watching or participating, send me a PM and I'll send you directions and let you know when I'll be cutting.

Here's a picture from last year, sorry I don't have a goofy hat for this year...

Just clicked on the photo of CA and A-C 40. Handsome little outfit.
Never saw a 40 in the field, but did see them in groves and fence
rows 50 years ago. Photographed one as part of 2008 Classic
Tractor Calendar (it was misidentified in photos). If yours is a CA, is
the Power Director (extra clutch) feature as rugged as the one in its
bigger siblings, WD and WD-45?

Picture is from last year.

40" header- makes you wonder how the guys back in the day could ever cut enough to make a living.

wheat ??? first thing i noticed, thats not wheat its oats! unless you have a new variety of wheat?

As Mike(WA) noticed, the picture is from last year when I had Oats. This year is definitely Wheat... I haven't started yet, but will get going this week. The picture was posted as a teaser. BTW, the tractor is a C, not a CA, although a friend has an All-Crop 40 that he pulls with a CA. Don't believe all you hear about live PTO being an absolute requirement for running combines, balers, etc. It works just fine as long as you work within its limitations.

No, the hand clutch on a CA is not as robust as the WD/WD45 is. The CA hand clutch is in the right rear axle housing and is dry. The WD and later D series with Power Director are both oil cooled.
It's easy to pick a CA out from the front. A C has no bosses (for mounting cultivators) sticking through the radiator shell, the CA has two.

When I was growing up, the Allis 5 foot combines were the going thing.

The other day, I was mowing our lawn with a 24 hp rider with a 54" deck and it dawned on me I"d spent many a day, and even weeks, combining wheat with a combine that took only a 6" wider swath than my lawn mower.

Honestly, I use the same argument with my neighbors who make fun of my little combine. I point out that there are lots of people who mow 1-3 acres every week with a 42" riding mower and think nothing of it. If you compare the number of hours spent over the summer on a riding mower versus the number spent with a 40" combine, it doesn't look so bad.
