Overlooking the Fix (Long)

I just got done fixing my ford 3000 tractor.I was mowing with it and it just died suddenly. Of course it was in the field away from the house so I had to get my tools and truck.I thought it was out of gas but that wasn"t it. Next I start checking for spark and there is none. So I change the points and condenser because they look burnt. again no go so I check the coil and it is good. It is getting late so pack up the tools. Next day I check the coil wire and the end is messed up. Fix that and I am thinking that must be it. Not the problem. So now I check the cap and rotor and they look good. Just when I am getting frustrated I look inside the cap again and am looking at the rotor. Then it hits me the piece of the rotor that contacts the coil wire is broken off. Such a simple thing but it took a lot of time to find. Put in a new rotor and it fires right up and purrs like a kitten. Sometime the simple things are the hardest to find. Rick

That is a 'Goldberg' fix! Maximum effort for minimal fix! I have been there many times before as well....

Don't feel bad,---LOL
Had a Triumph Herald one time , ( Looked just like that one Lance went in the water with , but mine wasn't amphibious model) did plugs, points condenser thing... wouldn't start, checked and made sure points set correctly. still no start, ground the battery too dead.

Had a neighbor pull me a mile down the road and back, Darn still wouldn't start !! opened the hood again and on top of air cleaner was the rotor. neighbor figured if I was that dumb I didn't need it started so he went home leaving me in my driveway I was 17 at the time .I left it set all afternoon till I decided to try it again and battery came back enough and it started .

I have a rotor button in my tool box that looks like new. The spring on top is good and shiny. The contact on the end is full width brass, no burn marks. GUESS WHAT!!!! It has an open in it. It will not fire. I kept it off of a JD 3020 gas ten years ago. It took two of us guys over a day to find out it was bad. So don't feel like the lone stranger on these type of things. LOL
