loader hydraulics

I have a Allied loader on my Long tractor, runs off the tractor hydraulics. When I tilt the bucket all the way down and drag backwards, the bucket won't hold, flops back up, but it will hold a load. Rebuilt cylinders already, didn't help. Could the problem be in the control valve? Any help would be appreciated.

Two possibilities come to mind. could be some air in the dump side of cylinder. Try cycling it (dump-curl) a dozen times, that might work the air out.
Or could be bad valve. Test is cheap, but a bit messy.
1- extend bucket to full dump position
2- shut off engine
3- work valve couple times to relieve pressure
4- this is the messy part. disconnect & cap or plug hoses to bucket cylinders
5- try back-dragging. if it stays now, it is a valve problem. if it moves most likely air in cyl.

Others may have different ideas or test methods.

How hard are you back dragging? Look at the position of the hydraulic cylinder. It is at it's least powerfull mechanical position when the bucket is in the "dump" position. You may be exceeding the relief valve pressure setting. I've actually blown a hose by doing this.

I've also blown a hose doing this, hose was old and ratty looking to begin with but back dragging real hard is what killed it. Also soaked me in oil.

Thanks for the replies. I"m not back dragging hard, just have to drag the bucket on the ground and it will flop back up, like there is no pressure on the other side of the cylinder. I"ll try checking the valve. Thanks Joe
