Cost to feed a dog

This is about dogs that ride in tractors:)
Someone said in another post that they spent $300 a year to feed a lab.
I did some professional training, boarding and breeding for years. I fed top quality feed, Purina varieties. Assuming a healthy ration of 20 oz kibble per day at todays prices that is about $220.
What are you feeding and what is your annual cost?

nothing he eats at the neighbors.
no not really he has lots of help from his buddies the cats so it is hard to tell.
but he is security system big enough he scraces the heck out of people. fed. ex guy won't get out of his truck if dog is outside

Table scraps. When he gets any hungrier he catches a rabbit, a cat, or eats from the cattle feeder. Total cost to feed him for a year "0".

Cost to feed a dog has to be weighed against what you want to spend in vet bills.

We just lost our lab mix to kidney disease at 10 years old. We always fed her Science Diet and thought we were doing well by her. Vet advised that most "big brands" are really not that good for longevity.

New dog is getting a small name brand that gets good reviews for content but has a wierd name: Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover's Soul. Costs about the same as Science Diet @ ~ $1.00/lb

One additional benefit of better quality food is less trips ouside for waste elimination.

We gots a blue heeler for our outside mutt and yes it may cost 2 or 3 hundred bucks or what ever,,,,Id say less but not bad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Then we got the little Schizo that THINKS shes a cow dog,,,,,,,,,,And probably is,,,),,,,,With all the speashel food,,,Treats,,,,Toys,,,Vet visits,,,,Boarding when we go and cant take her along,,,(seldom),,,,,,,Im thinkin it must be at least half my Gross income,,,,,,,,,,And well worth it,,,,LOL

Gordo Purina is not top quality food man. I have two Border Collies and a Stafford/Border mix and it costs me about 1100.00 bucks a year to feed our dogs top quality Canidae hard kibble. They each eat twice a day with about two cups for the pure breed borders and two and a half cups each meal for the mix. Purina is wheat gluten and other mystery fillers that definitely take it out of the "top of the line" food status.

You are exactly correct. Cheap food is much less filling and healthy for a dog. Take care of your best friend and he'll take care of your ranch.

I feed my four dogs--three beagles and an English setter--Diamond Naturals. It's around 30 bucks a bag and they go through a bag every four or five weeks, so $360.00 per year max. Add for heart worm pills and vet check-ups.

Well I feed the cheap stuff to both the dogs and cats and the cost no matter how you look at it is way way way to much. Dogs eat about 50-75lbs a month and the cats eat more then 20lbs a week and are about to eat me out of house and home LOL. Ya I have way to many cats because people love to drop them off on me

$ 0.00 if he gets fatter than he is he'l, die of heart attack. never feed other than table scraps and there far and few between these days. When we butcher he feasts for awhile though.

Old, I made the mistake of listening to my wife and adopted three cats for rodent control in our old house. Man those guys were eating us out of house and home. So, I found an old cat lady who took them off my hands.

I feed "Diamond Maintenance" which I get at the local Missouri Farmers Assoc. feed store. Since my dogs are both middle+ age and don't work hard it seems to work for them. They have good coats and plenty of energy. I think its worse for them to be overweight than anything. It costs me about 300+ a year.
If you feed you dog or cat Ol'Roy you ought to have to eat it yourself.

no idea he gets hungry so i feed him, he contrbutes far more in varmit comtrol and companionship than his food will ever cost

You need to do some reading before you pass out disinformation.
Go to the Purina website.
Purina has a wide range of dry dog foods.
Near the bottom is the "Dog Chow" In the middle is Purina ONE. 26% protein, 12 % fat, MAIN ingrediant is either lamb, turkey, or chicken, your choice.
At the top are the Purina Pro Plan foods. Nothing better anywhere, or even close.

I'm between Lebanon & Richland or about 45 miles NE of Springfiled on interstate 44 near the 145 exit. Normally exit at 129 coming from Spgfd or 145 coming from StL.

Of course Purina is going to highly tout their foods Gordo. I'm going by surveys and studies done based on the food quality and not on sales.

Check this out Gordo. I think the picture of the dog's face in the toilet says it all.

Look on the dog food LABEL ! If CORN is one of
the main ingrediants STAY AWAY !
Why should you feed a dog CORN ? ? ?
ALSO..read the label on Pro-Plan. It used to say
"Chicken digest byproduct...thats undigested
chicken feed thats been stripped from the
intestine, or maybe already on it"s way to turning to poop. Do you really want to feed your dog that ? ?

Never thought about it before. $30 per bag; 2 bags per month; $150/year for treats to help her joints; other treats...adds up to around $1000 per year. Wow.
The feed is Evo. It is the highest quality I could find.
Hey, it"s only money. If I didn"t buy dog food I"d buy beer.

Does it really matter? In the 2 years iv e had my boxer he's ran 1 burglar off (that I know of) killed at least 10 snakes and makes my wife sleep easy while I'm out of town all week. Not to mention being a awewsome companion. Dog food would have to be a LOT more exspensive that it is noe for me to even think about worrying.

I feed my dog Purina Dog Chow. 44lb bag lasts almost 2 months, cost about $22/bag. I have a 10 year old lab/dalmatian mix and since I switched him to Purina from Kibble&Bits, his coat has gotten shinnier, has slimmed down a little, and seems to have more energy.

My dad feeds his dog Ol Roy, heard that's nothing but junk...price would have me believe it.

When we were still milking, our dog quit eating the dog food. Turned out he was eating the supplement mix we were buying for the cows. I asked the vet about it, he said "He looks fine."

Don't know!

As others have said about dogs and wife(1), try cutting down on their proportions!

PS: Hope she (wife) don't see this. OR I'll be posting to John T for HELP!

Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog, and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had, an elephant? So, since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's a$$ and a car hit us both.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won't let me shop there anymore.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say.

P.S. This wasn't me, but some body else I know.

My border collie is my best friend, dosent matter what it cost to feed him.If he aint in heaven I aint going.
