Update on Backfiring

It turns out the reason my Cockshutt 540 was backfiring and wouldn't start was because the distributor shaft (Delco 12V #111717)was almost siezed and was pulling the dist out of time. I've pulled apart the distributor and inside the casing there is a bushing in which the shaft turns (supposed to). I suspect that with sitting for a couple of months some moisture has created problems. Morever, according to the parts manual there should be an oiler installed on it, but is missing from mine. There is a plug that I can remove and I could get some oil inside however, the oil would not get to the rotating shaft because there is no hole in the bushing.
So I could struggle and try to remove the old bushing and install a new one; but I've cleaned up the old one and it now is very shiny inside. So I'm thinking that I should just drill a hole through the old bushing, re-install the shaft, and rig up a piece of piping to get oil into the shaft.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

You are supposed to remove the plug install a grease fitting give it a pump then remove the zerk and install the plug. Thatss is the procedure if the zerk is in full time someone would overgrease and cause problems.

Doug, are you saying there was so much "drag" from the bushings the distributor was rotated a bit in it's hold-down clamp?

The only OTHER way it could get "out of time" would be if the gears or drive pin got damaged/sheared.
