Slime in an Air Compressor Tank??

I have a little one hp belt drive air compressor I picked up some years back at a garage sale for $10. I keep it in the garage for the occasional car flat tire and blowing out the back of the refrigerator, etc.

I know many of you are against welding rusted tanks, but a while back I extensively welded up the bottom and it works fine, except my welds are not air-tight. The pump will cycle every thirty-one minutes if I leave it plugged in.

Would it work to put tire slime in the tank and drain out the excess? The machine is set to shut off at 110 lbs psi. I probably only use it once a month.

Thanks,
Glenn F.

Perhaps T40 will chime in and enlighten us on what a good idea this is(n't)!

NO the Slime will plug up the compressor components. Just look up a good used tank and move your components over to it. I find non working compressors on Graig"s list all of the time. I have three. One I just left the tank and wheels for a big wheel around air tank.
Don"t weld around these air tanks unless you are a very good welder and are replacing all of the thin steel in those old rusted tanks.

I always try to heed the warnings on air systems. But, ya know, it's just some air in a tank.

One day the coupler on the end of the hose on my 10 gallon air tank, at 100lbs.

Man, did that air hose whip around! Sheez. One of those things you can read about, but just don't 'get' until you live it.

Don't take compressed air for granted any more. Dad brazed a few pin holes in some old air tanks.

I got some new ones.

Probably doesn't pay to say too much. Just hope you get a warning shot, before a serious failure. Then you will see for yourself.

Ignoring the whole tank repair thing, let's talk about Slime. Slime works in a tire because the tire rotates and spreads the Slime all around the inside of the tire. Unless you have a way to rotate your air tank through 360 degrees a few hundred times, the Slime isn't going to be spread around enough to seal all the leaks.

The other thing to consider is what that stuff will do if it makes it out the hose to your air tools.

Slime will speed up rusting of the tank. I suggest putting some enamel paint in the tank, place the tank so that the paint will flow over the welded portion and put pressure on the tank. The paint will be be forced into the welds.

If you've ever had the opportunity to see what happens when an air compressor tank ruptures, you'd never even think about trying to repair a rusted out tank. I HAVE seen a ruptered tank, and if my brother-in-law hadn't just stepped out of the shop before the tank blew, we would have been taking him to the hospital, or maybe even attending his funeral. Do yourself and your family a big favor and buy a new tank.

So rather than paying a few bucks for a new pressure tank. You would rather count on the Almighty to protect you and your family.
I can't recall he exact wording but it to the effect that. "we are not supposed to purposely put our selves in danger and expect the Almighty to send help".
The passage was referred to while Christ was fasting and being tempted by Satan. It was to do with jumping off the temple pillars and having the angels catch.
Or in brief. Are you completely out of your little bitty mind welding and using a rusty pressure tank?

In Egypt, the truck drivers all paint the name of Allah on their front bumpers. Apparently it's quite effective in preventing accidents. Glenn might want to try doing the same to his rusted-out air tank. It can't hurt.

Buy a new tank. What ever it costs it will save you money in the long run. Hospital stays are very expensive.
