Horse walker transmission

I have an old 4 arm horse walker and the electric motor turns the belts that turn a pully on input to a car or truck 3 speed transmission. Trans is locking up and stopping the rotation. Can i pull the side plate and shift arms off the side of the transmission to try to diagnose the problem without pulling the whole tranny out of the walker? Never worked on a 3 speed manual transmission. How complex is it? /are parts generally available?

Boy.Now you dunnit.
Labeled yourself as the dreaded horse people  I can't answer your question, but am interested in a walker myself. How big is yours (diameter) and is it a complicated setup? Guess I'll get that answer after you fix yours.......
Does yours lead or push/crowd?
Considering building one because of prices here.

If the problem is indeed in the transmission, just about bet that it has a bearing locking up.

Was it allowed to run dry without any oil in it?

Yes, you can pull the side cover, but that isn't gonna tell you much. See if you can get any "shake" out of the input shaft and the output shaft; they both use a roller bearing.

However, the weakest part of those old 3-speeds was the external shifting linkage and I'd take a real close look at that before opening 'er up.

Other than an output shaft bearing, you're gonna have to have it out and lying on it's side to service it anyway.

Further, if you have to take that input shaft out, two sets of needle bearings, which mate the input and output shafts, are gonna fall out. That's where the fun begins. :>(

Uff-Da! Been a million years since I worked on those things! :>)

Let us know what you find,

HAd one like that once. You should be able to get the side plate off; check that reverse shift lever, often caused a problem on our old one.

Dave, I had one that sounds similar and these things are actually a pretty cool "monster garage" type fabrication. Ours pulled the horses off 4 overhead legs. It was electric powered, belt driven into a 3 speed trans that was then belt driven into a car rear end at the pinion. The rear was stood on end- bottom axle removed, spider in diff welded, belt drive to pinion, overhead booms attached to a car wheel bolted to the upright axle. Pulleys looked to have been washer/dryer stuff .
The kids used to attach swings and ride it like a carnival ride- I've thought about building one again for just that purpose.
