bound bearings

I put the old bearings back in and it still bound. am I just missing somthing, this is not my first engine build and it seems like I can't figure it out. The old bearings said" Ford A2" on them and so do the " Clevite 77 bearings " so why the binding?

Treveor,

Did you have the pistons out? Is it possible that you have one or more of them installed backwards?

I overhauled a six cylinder Chevy engine a long time ago. In the course of doing so, I got two or three of the pistons reversed. The engine was bound up big time when I tightened the rod bearing bolts.

Just a thought.

I'm only putting in the crank and main caps. all my arrows point toward the front of the engine. that's why I'm stumped. if the crank was worked on the crank would be " loose in the std. bearings. but even the old ones are binding. maybe I just put it in the bearings crooked. ( but not 7 times ). somthing's not right.

did you plastigauge? Do each one. Or you can check each bearing as you put it in by turning the crank every time you tighten up a cap.

no I did not. I know I should have but its an old tractor for my Grandfather of 87 years old. he just want to see some one doing something with it. my wife thinks the same. but I have fallin in love with working on this tractor and in my way its imortalizing, this great old farmer. to see him still out workin' ........ I can only hope the same for my self.

Trevor check your main caps I think you have two or more out of it's place. The arrow has to go too the front But it has to be put back on the same main journal it came off of,even though there linebored they will not fit no other journal. If you try to put it on another journal it will lock up the crank when you start to tighen them down.

If the motor is out remove the crank, and bearings. Fit the caps to the block, and tighted them. There should be no ridge where the bearing cap and block meet. You must have the caps mixed up. look at the new bearings you tried to install there will probably be a shinny spot where it hit in one spot.Stan

Do one at a time, turn the crank every time, you will then find which one is binding, then figure it out from there. This way u can pinpoint which journal is causing the problem. I personally plastigauge everything because even the best machine shops have screwed something up once before.
